Is it good to give up smoking if you have been smoking all your life and over 80? -

Is it good to give up smoking if you have been smoking all your life and over 80? -

i had an argument with a health professional the other day, i said :

its bad for a very old person to stop smoking, as when you stop smoking all sorts happen within your body , and could cause greater infection by the introduction of a small virus which leads to a secondary infection, all old that smoke are from my point of view better interested in keeping on smoking all those over 80 :)My father in law had a stroke in his late seventies and he had smoked since he was 9 years old. His GP told him that he really should give up but by doing so would probably cause more problems than resolve. Bless him he lived a further 10 years. My Late Grandfather used to smoke 100 cigs a day. When he was 21 he went to the doctors with a cough. The doctor told him that smoking will kill you one day.
My grandad lived to be 102, but one day whilst out going to the post office, he was knocked down by a Benson - Hedges wagon.
So you could say smoking got him in the end...They do say it-s never too late to give up lol

Personally, I don-t think your body would take the shock!

What did the HP say in reply?it is actually better to stop smokning, but can be dangerious to do so in someone of that age (depending on there general health)

the safist way to stop is to do so slowly, as stopping in one go will have adverse health affects like huge ammounts of mucus in the lungs, and the withdrawl symptoms.Hi,if you are 80 then carry on smoking - be happy.Do not listen to the preachers - have a very happy life.Good LuckI personally gave up smoking 50 years ago and am thankful for that.
However, if you are 80 and been smoking all your life, there doesn-t seem to be any point in stopping now. It-s not done you much harm!
What would bother me a bit, is the fortune you must have spent on it all. Mind you, it must have given you a lot of pleasure.Have you been looking at my Atavar`??Sir, Respectfully I will share with you that SMOKING will decrease the age of your life, how about having CHRIST for sure it will increase 100 % of your life.My grandmother smoked up until her system just flat quit one morning. She was 96 and lied to the doctors when they asked if she smoked. She was a very sharp minded little old lady, who was going blind and deaf in the last year but otherwise very healthy!

I do not think one of these older persons should quit smoking. Especially if they are otherwise fairly healthy.I agree with you,I find alot of heavy smokers who give up tend to get cancer soon after. Smoke on!well i think that you should stop smoking no matter what age that you are. but from a practical standpoint if you were to stop smoking at age 80 (depending of course on how long you have been smoking) it really is not going to do much as the damage has already been done and stopping is not really going to help very much as whatever damage there is is already to far advancedI would tend to agree with you but I am anti smoking myself. Although I would not condemn someone who does as it is their body and up to them what they put in it.If you-ve hit 80 whilst smoking, why give it up now? I-ll be happy with 80 and I don-t smoke.if you still enjoy smoking when your over 80 then carry on,why go through weeks of withdrawal symptoms at that ageIf you-re over 80 and it hasn-t killed you yet why bother stopping? As my nan always said it was one of her few pleasures, why stop it?

And incidentally i have never smoked in my entire life and don-t plan on starting, i just don-t see what additional harm it could do to someone who is already 80 and it hasn-t affected! Unless they really wanna quit let them carry on!As it takes 10-15 years to reduce all health risks to those of a non-smoker is it really worth it?
I don-t know about infections but the stress of trying to give up would probably be riskier than carrying on.
Both my non-smoking sister and I (20 a day) have the same heart condition and neither of us are even 60! Doctor hasn-t even asked if I-m trying to quit!!!!You-ll never grow big and strong if you don-t give up!

(it sez -ere)no point cos it takes about 10 yrs to get clean out your system,id be happy if i got to 80,heres to your next 10yrsIf you have smoked all your life, and you are now in your eighty,s, I would try and consider cutting down, if at the moment it as affecting you health I would try and stop
