When will I stop coughing? -

When will I stop coughing? -

I stopped smoking 10 days ago and have been heavily coughing for the last 4 days... I am trying to loosen phlegm by taking expectorants, but I still have a dry cough. Its got to the point that Im loosing sleep due to the severity of the coughing...Your lungs wish to expel the toxins and coughing is a way your body is wishing to do that.

It may only be psychological but try rubbing some vicks vapour rub on your chest, just smelling the vapours may calm the coughing down.

Also drink plenty of water, eat oranges and take some herbal tea to sooth throat and at any time you wish to cough or smoke.

Keep up the good work - if the coughing continues another night I would go see the cessation nurse at your GPs surgery.

Good luck with it all. Thanks to everyone who helped out here - I have taken all your advice and weblinks / emails on board. All the best to all of you trying to quit and congratulations to those of you that have succesfully beat back the nicotine!!

I have been attempting to quit over the last 18 months and each time I find that I go through a cycle of symptoms and feelings and usually i end up falling back just because I feel like I am never going to feel -normal- again..
This is the best advice that has been given to me and I am bearing this in mind every day I feel I am struggling.
I am now coming up to two months and it is definately easing off.
It can be really off putting though. I have also found that I feel really breathless and feel that stopping is making me feel worse but it is passing.
Keep it up .. there is no easy advise other than what has been offered by others.. just try to remember it will pass. The symptoms will not last forever.
Good luck.According to Dr. Linus Pauling, a noble prize-winning scientist, the regular use of this vitamin in the optimum daily amount will prevent the common cold and if a cold has already appeared, large doses of this vitamin will relieve the symptoms and shorten its duration. He estimates that 1-2 grams or 100 mg to 200 mg per day is approximately the optimum amount of this vitamin. His advice is to swallow one or two 500 mg. tablets of vitamin C at the appearance of first sign of the cold and continue the treatment by taking an additional tablet every hour. Lime is the most important among the many home remedies for common cold. It is highly beneficial in all types of cold and fevers. It should be taken well diluted. Vitamin C-rich limejuice increases resistance, decreases toxicity and reduces the duration of the illness. Limejuice should be diluted in a glass of warm water, and a teaspoonful of honey should be added to it. It forms an ideal remedy for a cold and dry cough.

Ginger is also an excellent food remedy for colds and coughs. Ginger should be cut into small pieces and boiled in a cup of water; it should then be strained and half a teaspoon of sugar added to it. It should be drunk while it is still hot, in case of colds. Ginger tea, prepared by adding a few pieces of ginger into boiled water before adding tea leaves, is also an effective remedy for colds and for fevers resulting from cold.

Hope this helps, Good Luck.I quit smoking 7 months ago,i still cough but not half as much as i was when i was smoking. i quit through a quit smoking program, i was on the patches. they gave me a sheet that has what you can expect when you quit.if you like i could e mail you it.if you give me your e mail address. you can e mail me through my profile. i hope it will help, it helped me it gave me something to look forward to.well done for stopping i-ve just had a look at Quitnet and i think it would be a good idea for people to join think it-s best if you have support from people who know how your feeling good luck xxyou will have the cough for up to a year I-m afraid its part and parcel of quitting, but hang in there your doing a good job.well for coughing at night if you have about 3 or more pillows that will stop you coughing as much and if you bring some water with you and have a sip of it that will make you throght wet so you wont coughtKeep a glass of water beside your bed and take little sips every time you feel like coughing, it will help and after about a week it should stop, if not see your gp. Good luckgood for you! I-ve tried and failed to stop. i can tell you at the 14 day mark i was still coughingThe coughing is normal and is a good sign. It may last for a while.

Using an expectorant wont actually help you.

I-m going to give you a link to a really great site that I used when I quit. It will tell you all the things to expect and how to deal with them, as well as give you support. (its free)
