Hi. What is the best natural way (no meds) to stop smoking? -

what to do when the urge appears?

Thanks so much

Mickey in Montreal (Quebec) CanadaI-m 50 and I-ve been smoking for over 30 yrs now. Quit once for 54 days (long story).
The only way to quit smoking is Cold Turkey. Everything is in your head. Once you decide to quit just do it. Keep reminding yourself that you DO NOT smoke.
All the pills, gums, patches... are just there to put -you mustn-t smoke or you can die- in your head.
In many cases isn-t about nicotine, it-s about habit...what to do with your hands. That-s why you light-up sometimes and ask yourself why you did it.
Try to keep busy (get job at Gas Station...lol). In my case, I had a lot of peanuts in shell (to do something with my hands).
Good luckCold Turkey.i would say that would have to be will power!!

have a loved one help you say no when you have the urges.
get rid of all of your smokes in the house car office ect.

then when you get the urges do something that you really like to do so that you get your mind off of it..

ps i am not a smoker, but i absoultly hate when people smoke around me, it is so nasty.
you will feel soooo much healthy and clean when you quit!!

good luck!!i know your trying to go natural but I-ll tell you what - the patch works! I smoked a pack a day - always woke up with the urge to smoke until I tried the patch.... trust me, it can work for you too! Will power and don-t drink!

When you fancy a cigarette try a diversionary tactic such as getting up and doing something or taking some exercise. In fact taking up exercise and appreciating your increased lung capacity may encourage you to stay of the cigarettes!

Some friends swear by hypnosis but I think you get the longest lasting results by being intrinsically motivated to give up and stay that way.

You could try Alan Carr (google him) if you are interested in hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) as a way to aid giving up.Try cutting down first. Like only allowing yourself to have one every 1 or 2 hours. Do that for a week increasing the time to like 1 every 3 hr and so on. Pick a day and stop smoking. When craving arrive chew on a straw, suck on a candy, eat healthy foods, and if they are really bad go for a walk or exercise. Good luck to u.Well just ask someone to hide them from you.
Then just don-t smoke,
Instead try eating fruits and vegies.
And also sunflowerseeds and nuts are a big help too.
GOOD LUCK!

=)Try acupuncture.

You should be able to find a practitioner in Montreal.chew gum!eat gumsNobody is going to be serioustaht gum nicotine or something.Try some of the homeopathic remedies. They are safe, no side effects and don-t interract with anything. You can do everything that everyone suggests, but in addtion, you should start a workout regimine which will help you get your mind thinking healthy. When I quit cold turkey this is what I did to change my overall health, oh and chewing on straws, lol.I used hypnotism to get me started and a large rubber band on my wrist for pain aversion therapy for the urges.
Good luck and have a great new year if your calendar starts in January.I smoke again BUT what worked for me and what I-ll do again was to keep my hands and mouth busy. I chewed gum and candy all day and kept my hands busy with arts and crafts... I also tried to spend a lot of time in places where I couldn-t smoke.COLD TURKEY! The first 3 days SUCK, but after that, the crave subsides. Keep yourself occupied with other activities and keep plenty of lolipops aroundMy grandmother smoked for 40 years and just stopped one day without anything. I aksed her to stop and she did. Chew gum when the urge appears, that has helped alot of my friends along with cold turkey.I found sucking on Halls helped me a lot, it kept my mouth occupied and was refreshing, also I was a big car smoker, so I chewed on pens for a while when driving to help control the urges. And I would stay away from alcohol for a little bit, thats when my cravings went nuts. Good luck, the first 2 weeks are the hardest, but after that it gets a lot easier. You are making the right choice to quit, I am so happy I did, I have been smoke free for 2 months now!Despite all of the knowledge available, smoking is still one of the leading preventable causes of disease and death in the world.

Smoking is extremely addictive, and it does not take long before you find yourself craving cigarettes. Recent statistics show that every cigarette you smoke takes six minutes off of your life.

This means that smoking one pack a day takes away two hours off your life. Just imagine how many days that becomes over an entire lifetime, and you may begin searching for quit smoking aids or natural ways to quit smoking.

People should quit smoking, why?
There are a million reasons. Smoking affects just about every part of your body from your lungs to your heart, and even your kidneys and liver. The biggest risks for smokers are lung cancer and emphysema. Cigarette smoking stops the lungs from normal functioning, inhibiting breathing and damaging the lung tissue.

Though most smoking related damage can be repaired over time if you quit smoking, emphysema cannot be reversed once you have it. Heart disease is also a concern for smokers. Smoking causes greatly increased risk of heart disease, especially if you are also overweight, inactive or have high cholesterol. If you have heart disease in your family, you should quit smoking immediately to reduce your chances of a heart attack.

Smoking can also increase your risk for having a stroke, especially if you are a woman taking birth control pills. This combination can be deadly and should be stopped immediately if you are a woman over the age of thirty. Smoking also causes decreased circulation that can lead to blood clots, especially later in life. It can also increase diabetic symptoms in those suffering from the disease.

There is no best quit smoking way. However, if you are ready to quit, there are a variety of different methods to choose from that can help you along the way. For instance, there are natural quit smoking aids, along with medication smoking stop methods. Natural methods include acupuncture cessation smoking treatments and hypnosis. Medications such are Wellbutrin are also known to help cut down on cigarette cravings.cold turkey is a way but it wont work you will eventually give in .this is what you do go on the internet and research foods that make cigs taste horrible then try to fight wanting one but if you give in eat one of the foods it worked for my dadWil power, you have to really really want to stop and give it your best, my uncle read a book about a man who smoked 40/50 cigarettes a day and it lets you smoke while you read through it, he stop after reading it and hasnt smoked since, iv never read it personally, but it is down to will power mostly. When ever you want to smoke go for a drive or watch t.v to get it off your mindThe answer is here

There are hundreds of sites out there in internet land, but Im not sure witch ones to try because there are so many .

HEPL !!!

Thank YouDear e-mail friend as you are looking for help it means you really want to stop smoking,GOOD IT MUST BE YOUR FIRST STEP TO GO AHEAD,now look at yourself and say -I love myself and I-ll win this battle by myself with my friends help-.Good luck and think positively.all you need is will power just make up your mind and it will work i can tell you for certain ,i know somebody would have to get a cig arette at all costs he went on the nicitone patches for 2 weeks and that was that to this day hes not smoking and dont miss them try it best of luck there nasty .Try zyban after consulting with your physycian. If you want to quit you have to have willpower if you really want to you will.
Instead of quitting cold turkey try cutting back first, say if you smoke 20 a day over the week cut back to 10 then 5 then 0.
Find something else to do with your hands take up a hobby like swimming or something crafty, not only will it keep you busy so you don-t think about smoking but if you do something crafty you could make cards or pressents for people.
I gave up smoking a while ago and only ever smoke when i i go out for drinks otherwise i hate them.
Best of luck to you and once you quit stay a non smoker.Call 311 and request for the free patch. Happy birthday and the best of luck.Assistant manager of a pub, tried several times to quit in lots of different ways... smoked at least a pack a day but four weeks ago i just stopped. (I even threw away a full packet!)

I had had enough. It-s hard but you just get to the point where YOU want to be in control!

I-ve gone cold turkey and everyone is being supportive. It-s all about taking each hurdle at a time!!

I feel great already!

And so does my bank balance!

Will power is a marvellous thing!Good for you for quitting smoking. My mom quit in 1983 because Dad had a heart attack and both of them had to quit smoking. She went to a hypnotist; she said she wasn-t sure whether the hypnosis worked or whether it was her Scottish heritage saying that since she was paying for this then it had better work.

My HMO runs a -members-only- website with discussion boards. One of the discussions there concerns quitting smoking. There are also other resources available through the site for smokers who want to quit (some HMO-based and free, and others are contracted from outside providers and are not free). If you belong to an HMO and your HMO sponsors a website, go and see what-s there. :-)

I looked up -nicotine anonymous- in Google to see if there were such an organization; there does appear to be one:

http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org

Following the general format of -anonymous- organizations, there probably is no official fee (there might be a hat or similar device placed somewhere to collect donations, however).

Addendum (after reading others- postings): When Mom quit smoking in 1983, she put a carton of cigarettes in the freezer (just in case she needed them). She threw them out in 2004 when the house was sold.Something different works for everyone. Here is what worked for me.

First, I temporarily changed my entire lifestyle. I did not go around any of my smoking friends of family for about a month. (My hubby smoked at the time, but he was nice enough to not smoke at home for a month- he went for a walk to smoke). I also did not do any of the things that made me really want a cig like drink coffee or alcohol. After a month of not smoking, I slowly started adding those things back to my life without the cigs.

Second, I wrote -STEROID- on my fingers because my lungs had gotten a bad infection due to the smoking and I had to get a steroid shot once to clear them up. That way, whenever I wanted a cigarette, I had to face the guilt written on my fingers. You could write -CANCER- or something.

Finally, and this is the hardest- I had to come to terms with the awful reality of addiction. That is that I have accepted that I will want a cigarette for the rest of my life. There will never be a time when I don-t want one. Now that I haven-t smoked for two years, I go days without really wanting one, but suddenly sometimes the desire will hit me hard and I have to be really strong. You can-t give into that -just this one time- feeling and take a drag off a friend-s cigarette because that will make you start smoking again. I relapsed twice before I finally quit, and both times it was because of the -just this once- mentality. I-d have one cigarette, then one more three days later, then two, etc, then in a month I-d be back to a pack a day.

It-s all about hard cold determination and will power. There is no quick fix or trick. That really sucks, I know, but you can do it!dont give up try patches gum then this nasal spray my mum did it oh you need to fill the gap for your hands try knitting or jigsaws or somthing to take your mind of it its will power and if you want to live lomger then stopWell, I recommend getting one of them plastic fags that you put nicotine cartridges in, so you can still suck it and get your fix of nicotine, without the harmful smoke. I used one for six months and gave up for a year, but then I started smoking again, derrr how thick am I? Anyway good luck mate!If u really want to quit, u will start chewing gum and just quit.
But if u enjoy the taste of the earth, u will put back in your body what smokin takes out like antitoxins such as taking vitamin C daily and eating lung foods such as carrots and celery.
One cigarette destroys 200 mg of Vitamin C, so u need 2000 mg a day in your system to keep u healthy. Eat foods under the vitamins.
Its your choice, we just live once on this planet. For a start stop thinking about them they nearly killed me at the age of 38. Your not trying to quit you have quit you don-t smoke. Breathe deeply and slowly exhale fast. I found carrot sticks and oranges a great help. And smelling an old ashtray and telling myself that-s what I smelled like helped as well can-t stand the smell of them now. Good Luck be triumphant live longer and put them out of business.Your local hospital should have a smoking cessation group. I think most are either free or reasonable.
God luck- I am fighting it alsowell what i did to quit smoking was pick up a very time consuming hobby. i actually had to go to a few of them. since im younger i went and had 3 hour football practices everday, harder school class hw, and a guitar. but there are definatly things u can do as an adult now that was be equal in effectivenessNobody can help you except yourself. My birthday is on Tuesday next week. I am going to get some patches in the next few days to give them a try. Smoking to me is as precious as the air we breathe but I don-t want to end up dead or sick because of the cizgys that I really love. All the bestI have been a non smoker for 2 years and 10 months. I joined a Smoking cessation class. It was kinda like AA but it was so unbelievable helpful. The instructor went over benefits of quitting and consequinces on not quitting but nothing gory like a black lung or anything but it helped a lot it was eight weeks the first 2 weeks you can continue to smoke then the 3rd week is the quitting week it was put on by the county and if you were a resident you got 3 steps worth of the patch. Call your doctor and see if there is anything in your area. Quitting smoking is the most difficult thing to do.. its never easy... I still get the urge to smoke now... also the instructor told us that cinnamon helps stimulate the same tase buds as nicotine so sucking on a cinnamon stick or chewing cinnamon gum helps a lot too. Hope this helps you a little. Sorry if there are spelling errors i-m at the lauindry mat and my laundry has to be changed! =)It is a good idea to quit within a group,as you all give each other a boost when you say `i-ve not smoked for ....so many days/weeks or whatever.
They-re also there for you if you fail.
It-s hard quitting on your own,and with people saying you won-t do it,you need lots of positive support.
Ask around, and see what people have to say,and enquire on the sites about help you-d get.
