How do you help a friend stop smoking? -
A really good friend of mine is a smoker. He has 2 kids and is 24 years old. He spends like almost $150 on cigs every month. Smoking 1 to 2 packs a day I think. Im best friends with his girlfriend and he is like a brother to me. I told her I would help her come up with some ideas. I dont care if we annoy the crap out of him about it.Hopefully he will relize one day how lucky he is. His gf has tried the hole look how much money you save and how it can kill you kind of thing. She even wrote on his box with pernament marker this will kill you. He did really good for awhile on only smoking so much a week then he started doing more again.I think he wants to but he cant do it. What can I do to help him or were can I dind info? We also tried telling him he is setting a bad example for his kids.If you were really good friends as you claim you are, you would accept him as he is. So what if he smokes? I-m sure you-re not perfect either, but would you want correcting you and telling you what to do all of the time? I-m sure you wouldn-t. So just let it go, mind your own business, and let him do as he pleases. If you-re not careful you could lose him as that brotherly friend. Hopefully one day you-ll realize how lucky you are.The best way is to show him that you guys (er....gals) don-t want to be around people who smoke. It might suck, but leaving him, and telling him that you don-t want to be around him b/c he smokes will probably be most effective. If he cares enough, he-ll stop smoking. If he needs help, get him on the quitting patches, gum, etc. or get him into a rehab-ish programIt-s his decision. But suggest that he get a prescription for Chantix. You can take him to a hospital or convalescent home and let him talk to some people that are dying of emphysema or lung cancer. Let him see how fast the diseases progresses and how they suffer for weeks and months gasping for each and every breath, choking on their own phlegm. It-s an awful way to die. My dad quit smoking by replacing his cig-s with sunflower seeds. It was something he could do while driving, and after his meals and he still had the hand to mouth thing going on. He kept sunflower seeds with him all the time. Help him to stay away from activities that trigger in him the desire to smoke. I smoked for about a year and I quit. I only smoked like 3 times a day because I didnt want to make a life long habit of it. I put restrictions on when and wear i smoked. From the beginning I decided never to smoke around my children, and never smoke in my house. So when I would go to my nightclass I would have a cigarette and on the way home. after the kids went to bed i would have some beer and smoke again, that was it. But i also made a ritual like everytime after i smoked i would come in wash my face and hands and brush my teeth and change my shirt so i wouldnt smell like smoke to my kids ( i probably still did). but that ritual got so tedious by the time i was ready to stop that it made it a lot easier. also i started leaving my cigarettes at home instead of lighting up as soon as i got in the carHow do you help a friend stop smoking? -

I started the patch today, and so far, it is not working well. I put it on just before I went to work, and went 6 hours without a cigarette. Then went another 4 without a cigarette. I usually smoke about 30 cigarettes a day. Since I put the patch on 2. I know I am not supposed to smoke with the patch on but I am really not feeling anything. The patch I was given (by the state of Massachusetts -stop smoking campaign- it was free) is a patch I have never heard of before. Years ago, I did have some success with Nicoderm. Are patches different?
I have no problem with my hands. The withdrawals I am getting are around the the chin, cheek area. The bottom half of my face is really struggling without having a cigarette. -The rest of my body is fine with not having a cigarette. Has anyone ever had this feeling of withdrawal? I mean around the chin-cheek area?I personally don-t trust any quit smoking method that deals only with physical nicotine addiction. I tried several times to quit using patches, gums, herbs etc but none of these worked.
Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good.
Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.
Quitting smoking does not require any patches, gums, herbs or anything like that. These methods are expensive, time consuming and simply do not work. All that is required is a bit of motivation, self belief and determination.

Good Luck and Good Quitting
Kudos to you for wanting to quit! I wont lie, its gonna be tough. I haven-t heard about the chin-cheek area though. Have you tried using lollipops (suckers)? Maybe it is the action of having the cigarette in your mouth that your chin-cheeks are remembering? Hope I helped!It-s the habit that you are withdrawling from. This may sounds stupid but cut a carrot into sticks and hold it like you would a ciggie (obviously you would be biting into the carrot not trying to smoke it). This worked for a friend of mine.wow. sorry to hear your dilemma. {hug}
yes, patches are different. usually in strength. a STRONG Nicoderm patch is the way to go. sounds like you were a powerful and heavy smoker to smoke 30 cigs a day. so, definitely you need a strong patch. your chin-cheek area could be stress related. you are probably so stressed about quitting, hard to quit psychologically, body is going through severe withdrawals even if you don-t feel it, etc. that all of that and then some, have made your chin-cheek area tense.
please go see your Doctor again about the patch and ask about the chin and cheek.
good luck...!
love ya
those are my signature sayings.
{{{hugs}}}I hate smoking and I hate trying to quit. I think the patches are different but everyone tells me no. The best thing I have tried that works for me is Chantix (pill form). I went from a 2-2 1/2 pack a day. Now most of the time the most I may smoke is 1-3 a day. And I really can tell the diff health wise. You can only get it by Dr. RX and Chantix can be spendy but it really is worth it. To me and others I have spoke to the patches are mostly a tease but if it works GREAT. As far as the chin - cheek area no. But I do munch on Tic Tats alot. I wish you the best of luck!!!!!I cant quit smoking completely, What can I do? -

I-d like to know the best way to stop smoking - dont say will power cos that alone doesnt work for some people!Hypnosis did not work for me, but does for some.
I agree, will power is only part of it.. There is no sure cure for addiction to cigarettes other than stopping and there are so many ways to choose, you really and truly must want to stop or nothing will work. Just try everything you know about that is safe way to quit and hope that this will cure you. The craving for nicotine never goes away.
I would not rule out the possibilty of hypnosis just because it did not work on me, because I know people it has worked on. Good luck, you are on the right track.I haven-t tried hynosis so I can-t comment on that, but I would strongly recommend reading Allen Carr-s book (I think it-s called Easy Way to Stop Smoking). Don-t presume he-ll tell you to use willpower, quite the opposite in fact. I smoked 20+ a day for 25 years and I stopped by reading this book and going cold turkey. The first week was tough, but after that I actually found it easy. I never thought I-d be able to say that but it-s true. So read the book - what have you got to lose?i had it done and it stopped me for a week but it worked on my friend.....thing is i never felt like i ever went under anywayits a mental challenge .It didnt work for my mother either shes still a smoker trying to quit againshe was hymotized also to stop smoking when I was a teen. She still smokes to this day.yes hipnosis helps...but try this frist......every time you have a craving for a ciggerette....take a sip of water. It worked for my husband! Just make sure to check into the person that you are using before you pay the big bucks!!well will power has to have a lot to do with stopping smoking as for hypnosis yes it works on those people who truely want to give up and are suspectible to powers of suggestion, I gave up using NiQuitin losegners found those to be a great help and also read the book by alan carr which has a good few pointers - good luck with it anywaySome people say yes, some say no.It depends on the individual person, and how susceptable you are to the influence of the hypnosis.
As there are many different `stop smoking` aids out there,you-ll have to try a few until you-ve found one to suit yourself.
Try chewing gum (a sugar free one preferably) as this helps to relieve the craving for a while.it can do. my gran and grumpa got it done at the same time and it only worked for My grumpa. maybe he wanted to stop more.
another thing that can work is small magnets at certain points on your ear. every time you have a craving you touch the magnet.
