How do I stop smoking after 45 yrs? -

How do I stop smoking after 45 yrs? -

I-ve tried everything on the market, including all the new meds., but I can-t break the habit. my new boyfriend quit about 15 yrs. ago and he said ordinarilly he would not be attracted to a woman that smoked, but he was attracted to me right away. I want to keep him in my life, and I want to quit for my family - my health. HELP !!!Try to cut down first. The reason most people fail is because the nicotine in their system causes intense cravings that you absolutely cannot resist. Avoid buying them first of all. Then when you know you only have a few left, you will find yourself rationing them, in effect cutting down. There will be times that you only have one left late at night when you want one, but you save it for the morning because you don-t want to run down to the store in your Jammies and bunny slippers at 11:00 at night. If you can arrange a weekend campout, only take the minimum number of cigs with you to keep from losing your mind. You know what worked for me, I had a horrible cold and sinus infection for 3 weeks and couldn-t stand the smell of cigarette smoke. When the cold was over, so were the cravings because I had detoxed for 3 weeks. This only deals with the physical addiction. You may have to substitute other activities to counteract the oral addiction, like exercise, chewing gum, or whatever works. Even try making a deal with yourself that you don-t have to quit altogether. Its the finality of never that can defeat you too. I still have one occasionally, lets say a couple a month, but I don-t get enough nicotine in my system to rev up the cravings. Everyone is different, and some things that work for one person don-t work for another. Good Luck.go cold turkey but before you do, get an exercise program in line and get on a strict diet and stay on it.do not over eat or you will be sorryIt starts with a determination to quit. Make up your mind what you want - smoking or BF/Family/Health. Your body will get past the physical cravings after about a week of not smokin, and take about a month detoxing yourself of all the crap built up in your lungs and veins. The worst part is cutting out al the triggers, those daily habits that encourage you to light up. If you can keep yourself from lighting up when you have your coffee, or when you-re on the pc, or driving, or watching TV, or whatever else triggers you to light up, then you-ll decrease your mental cravings for smoking when those activities come around, and you-ll feel less anxious when you run low or out of cigarettes. Work on those things before you actually quit. It-ll hekp you cut down too before you quit. And when your habits of lighting up during all those activities fade from your mind, that-s the good time to work on quitting all together.

Really the worst part of quitting is the psychological end, not the physical. Chances are, if you-ve been smoking for 45 years, you-ll crave a cigarette now and then after you-ve quit. But the cravings decrease with time. And just keep resisting, do things to occupy yourself until the cravings dissappear from mind. You-ll do fine, as long as you don-t replace the cigs with food and become a blimp. Exercise. But you got to have faith in yourself too, and make your determination work for you. Look at what you have to gain When you quit. That alone should be your driving factor. Not to mention you-ll feel SO much better health-wise, and probably will want to start an exercise program and get fit with all your gained energy.I quit, I smoked for over 55+ years, I was smoking 5 packs a day

I cut back a few every day for a week till I was thereMy mother was a long time smoker. She got laser therapy at Laser Concepts of America. She quit that day and has not smoked since then. TRY IT! You have hope.yeaha nasty death-remind yourself every time you light up.Honestly if you-ve been smoking for 45 years youv-e already damaged your body and there is no hope...you can give up but it won-t help.you might as well keep smoking and enjoy the next 5 years you have left.give all your cigs away. And buy cocaine wit the rest of your money. JK IDKYou-ve really got to make the decision to quit, and then just do it - no trying, just do it and don-t stop doing it. Focus on the reasons you are quitting, not on what you think you are missing.

But there-s not much point in tossing your cigs, if you don-t fix the underlying reason you smoke. So why do you smoke? Lonely, bored, fidgety, low confidence or self-esteem, caught up in peer pressure, an excuse to indulge in self-guilt and pity, or just an out-of-date habit you don-t need now?

Once you-ve quit for 48-72 hours, the nicotine is out of your blood and the rest of your addiction is in your head. The good news is that there are heaps of things you can do to replace your habit - and solve your underlying problems. Healthy snacks and things to do with your hands instead of putting a cig in your mouth, exercise, skills, hobbies and new activities to fill in your old smoking time, etc. All these make you feel good about yourself and give you the feeling of control over your life and future.

It really works. I used it to quit YEARS ago - it stopped the cravings.i quit by gradually cutting down with will power and then using patches to brake the habbitWatch a good video for becoming a non-smoker.This is a rather tough question to answer. Actually, you can begin to use nicotine patches. If you choose this option, buy some lollipops to keep your mouth busy, which is part of an addiction (habit). If you have the money and wish to, join a program which helps you stop smoking.Just stop. That is what I did. Once you get through a few weeks it gets easier. I did it about 17 years ago.I did the patch(started about 41/2 weeks ago). It-s not so much the physical addiction anymore, rather the psychological that I-m having a hard time with now. I think it really comes down to how bad you want to quit, and then doing it. Talk to your doctor or even a support group. You can do it if you want to.i uit cold turkey after 10 years. its easier than you think, after 3 days the nicotine has left your system. after that its the oral fixation.be prepared to gain weight.I-ve smoked for about 15 long years and I quit cold turkey. It was very hard at the beginning but each day that went by not smoking became easier and easier.I felt really good after about 2 weeks. My mother died due to cancer from smoking she suffered so badly..by the time she died she weighted only 60 pounds total. That was a WAKE UP call for me.Its been 9 years now since I stopped and I-m glad I did.I would never ever forgive my self if i would end up dying of cancer

due to smoking and neither would you.So throw those dam cancer sticks away.YOU CAN DO IT!!!
I will support you if i have to! Good luck

Please remember where there is a will, there is ALWAYS away.

NO YOU DON-T!!!!! You-ve done well (two years/months i take it, not minutes?!Lol) I stopped for almost a year but started again, so don-t even think bout having one!! Do something else to take your mind off it! Good luck!HANG ON!! The craving will pass in a few seconds if you can focus on something else. You and me!
Buy the nicotine lozenges. They help with moments like this.Drink a Large glass of water as this cures the urge, Gave up 5 months ago, hang in there after the first 2 weeks it gets easier !My mum missed the motions when she quit

Get a small pencil and pretend your smoking it (trust me it works)Go find something to eat. Specifically some low fat meat like chicken, or other protein if you are a vegetarian, and a bit of carbohydrate. While an apple would be ideal, since you need help now, go for a cracker or a single cookie. Also if you have peanuts or almonds on hand (and are not allergic) eat them up. They are protein and good fat.

Don-t eat a lot of this though. A snack is about one ounce of protein and a small amount of carb if you are a woman. Double that if you are a man. Don-t worry about the amount of nuts.

Eat this instead of that ciggy. Chew slow and enjoy like you would the ciggy. Then drink 8 oz of water and do something that raises your heartbeat for a while, even just breathing rapidly in and out. Laughing is the best for this. The craving should subside, but it may take about 30 minutes. That is why you should divert your attention with laughter or exercise.

If you do this every time you want a ciggy, you should not gain much weight, if any at all, and should feel great.

Best of continued success!!keep answering - asking questions - you can-t smoke if you-re hands - mind are busy. get up - run around the building or climb some steps. do anything, but don-t go back!! good luck - I-m sending you strong vibes so you won-t smoke!!! lolHere have one .eat an apple they say they are great stress reliefI quite fancy some tobacco too - but I-ll stay off it if you will!I feel for you.I have tried quiting cold turkey before but have never been able to make it past the end of the 2nd day.I hope you can do it just hang in there. It is not so easy to stop smoking i respect your will, am now smoking a cigarette, i hope to stop it just like you be a man, resist don-t come down, you can make it and finally pray for me to be like you.get some Commit lozengesTake deep breaths and think of the consequences of smoking.Sorry can-t help you there I just started again after 2.5 years :-(

What always helps is just postpone it by half an hour. Tell yourself you will have one in half an hour, and then do the same again untill the urge goes away.

I-m stopping Monday again - hold thumbs for me. Thanks.Get in a hot bath and put on loads of nicotine patches.C-mon over...I-ve got lots!...Brewskies Too!!!You-re gonna think this is weird but doing a big spring-clean in your house is the best way to get you through the time until you are comfortable without having cigs. Why? Because you are scrubbing and scouring everything that haven-t had a good clean in a long time, which is exactly what-s happening on the inside: your body is getting rid of -dirt- stuck in the lungs just as when you are scrubbing of hardened-up cooking oil spots on the side of the kitchen cabinet (something you-d normally wouldn-t notice). Honestly it works! And it-s theraputic and your house will shine!Eat something crunchy... apply celery

Get up and take a walk around the block or the building... (depending on if you-re home /work)

The longer you hang in there the easier it will be and the closer you are to breaking the habit.

Go over your reasons for quitting.

Repeat to yourself (whether you believe it or not)

I am powerful and love myself. I am choosing to remain a non-smoker. I am a non-smoker. I will respect my body and my health. The only thing that worked for me was hypnosisso i guess everybody on here is gonna tell u not to smoke.and your actually going to listen.Lollipops and Yo-Yos.
I-ve stopped for 4 and half years now.
My Cat-s cradle is awesome. You dont say how long you have stopped for?

Two days/weeks years?

If its two years, have one its rank and that may put you off, I had cigarettes last night and I am not supposed to smoke, ARGH!

Try not to.Go get yourself a large bag of suckers. My husband and I quit cold turkey on November 1st. The suckers really helped. Don-t forget to brush your teeth more often though because of the sugar. If it-s too bad of an urge go take a brisk walk.Chew a gum to distract yourself off the urge.dont do it, or you will stink and die because you cant breath properly and everyone will look at you and think oh my god she is soooo wrinkly,
sorry girl had to be said xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxTake all of your money and lock it away in a safe then give me the key or the code so you can-t buy any more ciggys.

Or do the same thing but give a trusted friend the key/code.

Or just don-t carry enough money around to buy ciggs.my sister in law would buy the hard candy sticks.
