Stopping Smoking? -
My new years resolution is to stop smoking. I-m going cold turkey and today is my first day without one. What can I do to get my mind off it?I cleaned my teeth and chewed gum..if your mouth feels fresh it-s unlikely to make you want to smoke. I tried nicotine gum but it was so vile, I found that normal gum was just as effective.
Constantly talking about it and reminding myself i was quitting also helped, it was pretty boring for everyone else though!
It-s really hard, but after 3 weeks the cravings went and 7 years later I-ve not touched one. Cold turkey and sheer willpower are the only way. Good luck/Good Luck to everyone trying to quit the weed!!I-m trying again, having smoked for 30 years! I am disabled-nowt to do with smoking but they don-t help-I also have Emphysema which is thanks to the 30 years worth of lung filled nicotine.Going cold turkey-been there, tried it all before. My hardest point is stopping myself going to the shop to buy them.48 hrs so far.Take each hour, minute as it comes and DON-T watch the anti-smoking ads they remind you..good luck.lolI quit about 6 months ago. It was a very long way of doing it but what i did was simply cut down by one cigarette every day starting with the first one of the day. Because there was limited pressure its quite easy to do. Its the final few ones that become difficult. And chewing gum is the best for that.
After a couple of months i thought i-ve quit now and i don-t want to smoke often. However for some stupid reason i thought it was good to smoke when i drink. Unfortunately this kinda made things more difficult as now i still only smoke when i drink but i drink everyday now just so i can smoke. Poor I know.
Gunna try again today though not drink, then tomorrow to drink without smoking and work on it from there.
Moral. Once you-ve quite, don-t let yourself smoke again!Be glad you quit, my Dad quit, but he-s in the hospital where they are testing him for lung cancer. he had been sick ,but the day after he quit, he had to go to the hospital.read a book, i stopped smoking in november and what i found really hard was killing the time i had in work for my breaks which i would usually spend smoking, i brought in a few books and read them during lunch and tea breaks. when i wanted a cigarette at home i cleaned. it kept my hands busy!!hi
well done you have made a good choice to give up the weed
i gave up in january last year, i also read Allen Carr-s Easyway book after two mates read it and gave up
You can get through today by going and buying the book it cost £9.99 IT does not tell you awful things about cigs it just makes sense i took it with me everywhere and when i was feeling low there are chapters you can re-read to help, please give it a try.

YOU CAN DO IT
YOU WILL BE SO PROUDHi my name is Tony and im also giving up smokeing ive been reading a book on how to give up by Paul McKenna and it is helping me in the book he talks about when you crave for a fag remember a good point in your life when you was on top of the world sort of speak and imagine your there now and if you want something to do with your hands squeez your thumb and middle finger of your hand that you hold the fag with at the same time has remembering the high point of your life, try it and see the book is call quit smoking today if you decide to buy it it also comes with a cd. good lucki went cold turkey as all the nrt i used gave me rashes or made me feel sick.i just drank loads of iced water fruit and went and kept myself busy.even coming on the pc keeps your fingers and brain busy.good luck and if you need any more help pm me im only too pleased to help and advise.after 36 yrs of heavy smoking im free at last..put butts ends in a jar of water and see how manky it looks after a day or so.
each time you think about a cigarette, open the lid and smell it - guaranteed to put you right off.
good luck!Just start again.
Giving up is for quitters.It-s the New Year and I-m stopping again.. I-ve stopped before and it has been so easy! You have to want it and once you are convinced, it-s easy, those cancer sticks are bad for us and we know it! Stay of the drinks and play it low for a week, it should be OK, sleep loads, and read loads, or write loads if you are into it, or watch DVDs.. or go down the gym loads or keep busy the best way you know! Just stick to your decision, don-t be a light weight and that should be enough to keep you off it! If you still have problems, every time you think you want a fag, dedicate your goodwill of not having one to a loved one, a person you love dearly, a person you know struggleling for worse, family members, friends, anyone you know and I can guarantee you you will go through everyone you know maybe three times and them you will be fine! Nicotine physiscal addiction can be out of your system by 5 days and then it-s only in your head.. CONTROL, is within your reach, be in control, it-s your head!!! For me it-s day 2 today, New year-s resolutions holding on! Check you in a few days.. let me know how u r doing! XpaoXEvery time you want to smoke imagine how ugly it is ,how dark and old ,unhealthy and sad it will make you, then imagine yourself smoke free, healthy ,energetic ,living life to full.It-s up to you which way you choose.I wish you succeed with your resolution.
xHi there,
Well done, first of all!
I gave up smoking just over a year now.
I bought the Alan Carr book - Easyway to stop smoking, I think it is called. I had to read it twice as I didn-t take everything in the first time but it really worked for me. It-s a non-judgemental book that goes through all the issues that smokers have and addresses every myth and excuse about smoking that exist. Did you know that nicotine is out of your body within about 24 hours? I didn-t.
The book doesn-t recommend the use of any nicotine replacement products and I sort of went -cold turkey- because the patches I tried didn-t stick (too much moisturiser, I think). I didn-t pick a very good time but then again perhaps anytime is a difficult time to choose. I had a pack of those microtab things for the first week but they were horrible. I just told myself that I wasn-t going to have a cigarette but I could have one of those if I wanted to. After a week I couldn-t face them anymore so I just told myself that I wasn-t going to smoke again, no matter what.
My diary would have been like this:
Day 1: Felt all pleased with myself.
Day 2: Panicked a bit when I realised I wouldn-t smoke again.
Week 1: It was a novelty and I was checking my progress on the -Stop Smoking- website (NHS), you know the one - -after 12 hours, carbon monoxide levels fall to half....-
Month 1: Still counting and having the odd craving....
Month 3: That was about the cut-off point where I stopped counting the months.
1 year 2 month: Free as a bird of smoking and have felt like this for ages.
I put very nice air fresheners in the car - as expensive as I wanted (without guilt) and bought a really expensive perfume that I wouldn-t have justified myself buying before.
I bought a knitting kit... I-m still bad at knitting but I did enjoy it!
I read a lot - it was strange without a cigarette at first but I love to read so I soon got used to it.
Started using my juicer - fresh juices really taste nice and I didn-t want to -pollute- them, if that makes sense.
Bought gorgeous and expensive hair products, shampoos, etc.
I don-t know what you enjoy; for me it-s perfumes and things like that. I don-t think you can get your mind off it at the beginning but I do know that it gets a heck of a lot easier, every single minute, hour, day is one more that you don-t smoke and it-s never going to be that hard again.
I was really concerned at the start that people I knew that had given up talked about -cravings-. This made me feel like I-d never be free. When I did it myself, I found it wasn-t so much a craving, I didn-t want a cigarette - it was like suddenly feeling that you-d forgotten something - only a fleeting momentary thing - and truthfully, that-s as bad as it got for me.
I really wish you well - if you can tell yourself that you don-t smoke and then take each day at a time, you-ll get there, I know you will.
Good luck!don-t go cold turkey try putting them somewhere where you hate to get and anytime you want one go and get one or try going to a local conveniant store and buy a pack and tell them to only let you have or two but thats it (like per day or whenever you go up there)get some celery, carrots and cucumber and chop up into little sticks to nibble on. That way you get to do the hand movement thing and will get lovely and healthy too!My mother has been a non smoker for the past 9 months.
She told me she drank lots of water to flush out the nicotine out her body.
She went for walks if she needed a cigarette.
*she went cold turkey also. Those nicotine band aids still have the nicotine in it. So its not actually helping you.Get some nicotine gum, it does help believe me. (and I hate gum at the best of times)good luck with the cold turkey -_-. btw dont try those patches and stuff because you end up being addicted to those products instead of smoking. if i were you i would have just smoked less and less slowly. you should take up a hobby like bowling B]. or you can cook for fun :D. or you should go swimming with friends
:DDThis sounds funny but those big pretzel rods help. you are putting something in your mouth and they kind of resemble a cigarette. I ate a lot of them so many I had to scrape off the salt but it helped.just remeber why you decided to quit in the first place! yeah, chewing gum helps but isnt quitting smoking a massive personal achievment anyway? i think the extra 30 odd quid a week saving should be enough??I tried cold turkey 3 times but didn-t work - but everyone is different - in the end I used nicotine gum, and that worked, along with reading a load of stuff about how bad smoking is, how it destroys you inside and out, and how it affects your looks (teeth, skin). I had also had repeated bouts of bronchitis and as lung cancer runs in my family, when the doctor told me I would die young if I didn-t give up, that finally did it - so to summarise - get it firmly in your brain at how bad smoking is (read loads of stuff about it), think about your health and looks, and think about the bottom line - it kills you, possibly slowly and painfully. All that worked for me - it was a bit of a strugge, but the gum, the mind excercises, and distractions like walking and reading helped a lot - don-t be afraid to ask for help. I had to wean myself off the nicotine gum, but that-s the whole point - you have the nicotine, but not the hundreds of other harmful toxins in cigs - once you-re past a certain point, the gum can be cut out. I wish you luck - you CAN do it - everyone said to me -if you can do it, anyone can-!Heya chicks!
Good 4 you quitting smoking. I-m off them since Oct 1st and still going strong. I have tried quitting b4 a couple of times but failed and i-ve put this times success down to a book i read. Its Alan Carrs Easyway to quit smoking.
I was afraid that if i quit i-d put on weight and eat loads and i convinced myself i-d never do it anyways so i always ended up goin back on the cigs. I-d also tried the patches and they were useless coz they kept the craving alive!! However, with the book i just brought it everywhere i went. I kept it in my bag and whenever i got a craving i took it out for motivation and it really worked! If i was at home and i wanted one after food or anyt i jus took it out and read it until i didn-t feel like one anymore.
Now its three months on, i don-t need the book with me at all. Its still near to hand at home JUST IN CASE, but i don-t even think about cigs anymore chicks!
Anyways good luck chicks if you wanna email me to chat or for support feel free
Dolly xxxxi found drinking lots of water , good to get rid of the taste of ciggswhen feeling like getting one, JUST bring your finger to your lips, and do like.
You will realise that the part of your brain that control tour habit, will release a sensation of satisfaction.
You can repeat this as long as you have feelings of smoking, and, until the nicotine get out of the body.... the rest is psychology and determination. Good luck.Well my dad gave up smoking last year in feb and he was brighter happier and healthier hes 45 and i hope you can carry on cold turkey thats what he did and thats what my step dad did (step dad has given up for 5 years now hes forgoten all about fags) but sadly my dad couldnt cope with what was going on his x wife was in the pub with his x girlfriend and they were both slaging him off so he started but my advice for you is relax keep your mind off them and you are sure to stop for good. Good luck mate :).I can advice you a great book how to stop smoking and it really works! It helped me and millions of smokers.Just read the book! The author is Allen Carr and the title is:The Only Way to Stop Smoking Permanently. You will enjoy freedomchew chew chew gum.a doctor told me 2 drink plenty of ice cold water when you get a craving.as the cold water kills the craving at the back of the throat. and the water also washes ur system of nicotine it worked for me good luckEXERSIZE!...its both a positive step in tha healthy direction ur takin and a stress reliever, seriously man, exersize is greatYou can get a drug called ZYBAN from the NHS (although they are trying to get rid of it because it costs them too much) it is not nicotine based so no worries about being hung up on nicotine after you quit... worked for me, its been just over 2 months not one smoke!
