If my dad suddenly stopped smoking cigarettes would he have any bad side effects? -

He has been a smoker for over 40 years now. He tried to quit before, but he said sometimes, when he doesnt smoke, he feels like he cant breathe. It would be better to stop now right?Yes, it would be better to quit.

When smokers quit -cold turkey- the body begins to flush out all of the toxins they have been inhaling.

This is why smokers feel like they have come down with the flu,

why they suddenly start spitting/coughing up terrible looking stuff (tar from their lungs)

For most people it takes 4-10 days for those symptoms to pass. Folks that exercise (i.e. so they sweat,) flush out the toxins quicker.

I recommend tapering down to a 5 cigarettes per day and then quitting.

Most smokers only need 3 to 5 cigarettes a day, most are -auto pilot- smokes they can easily do without.

By tapering down, it doesn-t shock the system as much as the Cold Turkey, and rather than reaching for forty cigarettes a day (if they smoke two packs a day) they are only fighting the urge to smoke 3, 4 or 5 times a day.

Good luck to you and your Dad!It is always better to quit, he needs something else to help him with his anxiety other than cigarettesYes, it would be better to stop now. But after 40 years of smoking, he could have some severe withdrawal symptoms. Is he willing to see his doctor and get some nicotine replacement products, like the gum or the patch? This can ease the transition by gradually reducing the amount of nicotine in your body, and can lessen the withdrawal symptoms. I hope he succeeds in quitting -- he-ll find that he soon feels a lot better. Good luck to you and to him!He must quit. Maybe an anxiety medication will help you.
Everything is better then smoking.
Good luck!!!the worst -side-effect- is the possible crabbiness.....but seriously, if he has breathing problems like asthma, ect. he should be suppervised by his doctor.....there is even medicine that helps someone quit smoking, his doctor can give him all of the info that he needs, my dad did quit after 30+ years of smoking.....it can happen.THE NEWEST DRUG ON THE MARKET (TO MY KNOWLEDGE) IS -CHANTIX-AND IT WORKS DIFFERENTLY THAN ANY NICOTINE REPLACEMENT SYSTEM - IT WORKS ON THE BRAIN BY REMOVING THE -REWARD- (PLEASURABLE FEELING PRODUCED BY DOPAMINE). EVERYONE I KNOW WHO TRIED IT HAS BEEN ABLE TO QUIT. IT IS NO -MAGIC PILL- AND STILL TAKES DETERMINATION AND WILL POWER, BUT IT MAKES IT MUCH EASIER THAN ANY OTHER METHOD I-VE EVER RESEARCHED,USED OR HEARD ABOUT FROM OTHERS.....
