I have a two part question, one how much does alcohol affect cholesterol levels? -

I just got diagnosed with high cholesterol and I have decided to change my diet and exercise but I was wondering about alcohol consumption. Second, I know all the web sites say to stop smoking. I smoke and I am going to try to trim it down but what in cigarettes causes a higher cholesterol. By the way, I do not know if this makes a difference, but I am 23 years old.
