I want to quit smoking cigarettes, any ideas? -
I-m 19, I-ve been smoking since I was 15. It was mostly a social thing, whenever I was with friends or partying I always had to have a cigarette in my hand. I want to quit now while I-m still young since I-ve been able to quit everything else along with those partying days. Now, I never smoke when I am at home because I have built up this mentality where I think it-s not allowed so I won-t want to smoke as much and it has worked amazingly, I never want to light up when I-m home.
But the problem is, when I-m at school or work, sometimes on the road, I have a strong craving for a cigarette because I believe that it gives me something to really look forward to and helps me deal with stress.
Since the other one has worked so well, what are some other psychological things I can tell myself to help me stop smoking at these places? I would like to stop cold turkey because gum, patches, and inhalants scare me.I kept my grandmother-s obituary in my wallet for a year...she died of lung cancer from smoking. Whenever i wanted a cig, i just pulled it out.Well, congratulations on starting this process! Its a big step to try to quit.
I would try something to replace smoking. Gum, mints, hard candy, or something similar. Every time you get a craving, pop a -fill in the blank-. Might work.
Something else might be a cup of coffee or tea. Also, a good strategy might be to do something that relaxes you instead of smoking, like listening to your favorite song or something.
The idea with all these suggestions is to replace something that relaxes you (cigarettes), with something that relaxes you or takes your mind of the craving.
Good Luck!It-s going to take a lot of willpower because the addiction to nicotine is highly psychological and it never quite goes away--you just suppress it.
If you want to quit cold turkey, you need to get rid of your cigarettes and push through the withdrawal symptoms, perhaps with the help of a patch.

Well you should quit well at least try if you can-t stop you should call quit line or something they really help my sister said if your friends force you tell them no!!!!! you have to stick up for your self if you keep smoking you will get lung cancer or other wise you may get a disease it-s not really help full smoking. It can cause all sorts you should be able to live your life with out getting cancer at 45 years old so try gum it will work if not you may need to take pills gum shouldn-t scare you well it shouldn-t so good luck with the bestThe patches are ok as long as you aren-t allergic to the plastic stuff. they gave me a rash.
The gum and the lozenges cause mouth sores so you won-t use them very long at all. I don-t want the inhalants either.
A friend suggested I chew on a piece of cinnamon stick!! That didn-t work too well either.
I have tried deep breathing exercises when places I can-t or shouldn-t smoke. They do help me a lot. Also sipping ice water helps.
No I haven-t quit yet either.Try the patch, there shouldn-t be side effects only when you smoke there are, the gum makes you throw up I heard because it turns your stomach so bad from the nicotine that it makes you sick. Also that thing on tv that you put on your ear, i heard that really works, its a magnet. or something. best of luck, smoking is a horrible habitwell smoking is yes a very addictting thing but u can quit if u stick to it and dont give in to any sense of craving at all um u said its like a stress reliever well try working out its good 4 u and it really does help relieve stress also nicotien patches and just think of smoking not being allowed anywhere and everywhere u go hopefully ive helped Good Luck!!I-m a smoker for more than 10 years and I have tried to stop this week for the first time as an experiment. I was able to stop a few hours and I felt the most cruel brutal withdrawal symptoms. If you don-t quit now for any other reason, quit now just because of how hard it will be later on. Good luck.Wait until you have a good cold, lots of congestion. Allergies will do the job. The key is, lots of nasal congestion.
Then. chain smoke a pack of the raunchiest cigarettes you can think of. I guarantee your mouth will taste like a horse took a crap in it, and you-ll never smoke again.just stop buying them and find something else to do. buy gum that helps you stop smoking. gum shouldent scare you its just gum that helps you quit nothing else to it. just whatever you do don-t cave in.You have to go running every morning and drink a lot of water. When you run a lot cigarettes taste bad to you. You also have to cut caffeine and chocolate out of your diet.Be strong and don-t give up.Good for you Sara! Your lungs will thank you. I have done it all: gum, patches, inhalers, pretty much everything except being hypnotized.
The withdrawals sucked in the beginning. Then I got smug and thought I could have one once in a while. Which actually did work for a while, but it eventually brought me to buying a pack. Once the pack was done, the cravings sucked again.
Whats working for me now is I have my last pack highlighted with my quit date on it. I still want one here and there, but I tell myself that I can-t socially smoke. As long as you keep your mind occupied, you will not think about it as much and do your best to avoid smoking friends and aquiantences.
Most important, you need to be ready. None of this will mean anything unless you made it up in your mind you are done. Thats your source of strength.im in the same boat as you are, im 18 1/2 and have been smoking since i was 14. Complete social thing, bad crowd of friends and such. but now that i am out of highschool and entering college i also want to quit smoking. what i have found that has worked for me is focusing on your breathing. take up yoga if your brave enough. but whenever your craving a cig, take some really deep breaths and mentally tell yourself your better off without one. start associating smoking cigs with laziness, and what people think about people that smoke. find everyhting you can thats bad about people that smoke like the bad smell that no one wants to be around and how it turns your nails yellow and how bad it is for your lungs. just imagine that when your in the car or at work. i know what you mean thou, when it comes to look forward to that when you get out of school your heart almost seems to skip a beat. just keep breathing and breathe through it though, stay strong. it takes an average time of like 8 times to quit. but the sooner the better for you! The best of luck to you! stay healthy and start workin out more to stay motivated.whenever u want one just think what ur gonna put in ur mouth, well some smokers dont know so i-ll just type it anyway. one of the main ingridents is tar, yeah u know that stuff people put on their driveways. so do you really want to go eat tar. try finding something that keeps you off of it. also think you can die early for it. amy winehouse is 24 has developed some kind of disease/ cancer thing and if she continues smoking she will die SOON (25-30 years old) your 19.. do u seriously want to live for 6 more years or until ur 60-70 more years. just think about itYes, I know quitting smoking is very hard. My nana smokes, and has been for over 20-30 years. She-s been trying to quit for a long time, and I-m trying to help her, but she-s stubborn. lol.
What she-s done, that-s helped her improve, is when she-d want a cigarette, she-d get her mind off smoking. Maybe reading, or watching T.V.
Also another thing, LIMIT YOURSELF. One in the morning, one in the afternoon, one at night. Then try NOT to have one in the morning/afternoon/or night. Soon you will get a free will NOT to smoke.
