Stop smoking advice; Social anxiety and smoking? -

Stop smoking advice; Social anxiety and smoking? -

I-m 18, I-ve been smoking since I was 14. So I haven-t been smoking all that long.
I smoke around a pack of b-h gold a day, more if I-m out -/or drinking. I also smoke very strong arabian tobacco (Dokha) through a pipe, which inevitably makes my cravings much much worse, since it has at least triple the nicotine than a cigerette does.

I know I can quit smoking, I know I have the willpower to, I have stopped for 6 months previously. The only barrier preventing me is social anxiety; which is why I picked up a cigerette again.

I-m usually quite a quiet person. I-m not completely socially ept. Have you ever felt extremely awkward in a situation, and everyone could feel how out of place you are?

Like, in a room full of intimidating people, and they-re all taking the piss out of each other and your just sitting quietly in the corner?
Or ever been at a party full of loud people you don-t know, possibly speaking another language, and you just wished you had a drink in your hand or a cigerette just so you look less awkward doing nothing/with nothing to say?

The best way I can relate this, is when someone is standing on their own on a street waiting to be picked up, near a pub thats closing and exiling rowdy drunks. Or just waiting on their own in general. Quite often you see them picking up their mobile phones and pretending to be busy texting, or picking up a paper and reading it, or doing anything to look busy. It is EXACTLY that feeling, except instead of pretending to text, picking up a cigerette and smoking it.

When I feel socially awkward or anxious, its not particularly the hit of nicotine that helps, although that too. And its not specifically the ritual, although that definetly helps. It-s just something to do with your hands that help. Doing something with my hands, like rolling, and then smoking, makes it all the less awkward.

I know if I can tackle this one barrier, I can definetly quit. I have the willpower to stop, its just that this will be the number one thing that will tempt me to pick up a cigerette again; even if all cravings are gone.

Any thoughts?Nicotine is an effective anxiolytic agent, as you have pointed out.

There are alternatives available. You should speak to a mental health specialist and ask whether your condition warrants prescription benzodiazepines.

These, in combination with therapy, will help you overcome your social anxiety.

Ive stopped smoking and became addicted to crisps? -

Ive stopped smoking and became addicted to crisps? -

what can i do im addicted to cheesy deretos.Congrats on giving up smoking I gave up a few months ago and it is hard. i substuted a ciggy for chewing gum and mints as I thought less fattening however i made that many trips to toilet as did not realise the mints had laxatives in them lol.
Try and find a crisp low in fat/salt other wise you will gain weight.
I also used Nicarette gum to take away craving of ciggy this helped no end and didnt snack.
Good luck deretos are nice lolIt-s very common to substitute one addiction for another. The problem with smoking is you have to conquer both the physiological addiction and the psychological addiction. You are probably over the physiological side of it now so work on the psychological side and get rid of the crisp, unless you want to be really fat that is. Consider your trigger points. What sparks of the need to snack? You will probably find there are particular times of day, situations or even sounds which you associate with smoking and now with cheesy doritos. That triggers the psychological need. Once you know what those are you can either avoid them, or find a less destructive activity to indulge in.

Good luck, but remember the crisp addiction, though unhealthy, is less unhealthy, cheaper and doesn-t damage anybody elses health.Hahaha, I love Doritos! Anyways... When people stop an addiction they-ve had, they always become addicted to something else. Addiction is more of a personality than an actual ingrediant (despite what they think about nicotine).

Congrats on quitting though. My advice, is quit doritos like you quit smoking and find something else to get addicted to thats better. For the time being i am guessing being addicted to doritos is way better then being addicted to smoking, i-m sure it will only be a temporary addiction and no where near as harming. Do be careful though, maybe try snacking on grapes or something healthy? When I quit smoking I was the same way and so was my hubby. Most smokers have an oral fixation, we just have this thing about putting stuff in our mouths. Make an effort to replace the Doritos with a healthy snack. I can-t stress the importance of exercising enough. Working out does wonders for getting you back on track to good health and it-s a much better habit than bad snacking. Good luck!It seems to me that you change one habit for another, I think that maybe you took the decision of quiting smoking but you are not so sure about it, I mean that you are not completely committed to quit and you substitute the cigarettes to crisps. I don-t think that they can do you much harm maybe you could gain so weight but eventually if you don-t internalize the reasons why you should not smoke again you could smoke again. I-m telling you this because that happened to me. After 8 years of smoking I quit and I only spent 1 year without smoking. Now I-ve done it again and I think for good I quit ! I have more than one year without smoking and I don-t think I could fall again, but the difference this time is my internal attitude. You can do it!It certainly is healthier than smoking however just keep working on and you should be goldenGo with it at the moment. Once you have got rid of all the nicotene in your body you will naturally stop craving the snacksIve given up too and im addicted to food, any food, ive put 16lb on in 4 months.Well done m8, good lad u will feel the benefit in time to come. Just dont be tempted to start again.Congratulations for quitting smoking. You need to find another thing to snack on instead of Doritos. Something healthy like fruit or veggies.Well it-s healthier than the smoking. if you have to do one, stick with the one you got.Wean yourself off them buy eating Wotsits, then after Wotsits you can begin eating harmless cardboard. The taste is very similar.

For those who have stopped smoking using Allen Carrs method/EasyWay? -

For those who have stopped smoking using Allen Carrs method/EasyWay? -

Okay, I read -The Only Way To Stop Smoking- and finished it a couple of days ago. I totally agree with Allen and understand his point.

However, since I stopped smoking, I-ve wanted a cigarette constantly! People say that the physical cravings only last about 3 minutes but I have been thinking non-stop about smoking for two days solid, every single waking minute and I don-t know about you guys but it-s driving me bloody nuts.

Just based on what I-ve told you, this seems more like the -willpower- method than this apparently ridiculously easy method of stopping smoking.

I would attend an Allen Carr clinic but in New Zealand, they cost $455.00 and I seriously do not have that kind of money.

Where have I gone wrong with Allen Carr-s method? I know smoking does nothing for me, that I-m being controlled by a drug, that the discomfort and craving has been caused by the last cigarette e.t.c. e.t.c, but I still want a cigarette. Up to this point, it-s been extremely difficult to abstain from smoking (but I have) and I don-t know how much longer I can.

PLEASE HELP! Seriouslyafter 44 yrs of smoking I quit 11 mts ago, it does get easer as you go along but I don-t think it ever completly goes away, please stick with it and get someone close to you for encouragement, it does help, you will not be disappointed in the futureI quit 14 months ago using Chantix. I still sometimes want a cigarette. I won-t have one though because after smoking for 35 years I don-t ever want to go back! I don-t know if smokers ever really get over the craving. I guess we just need to stick to our decision. I really wish I knew the answer. Good luck and please stick to it.Hey You! You are doing so well and Im very proud of you.Easy thing to start smoking but what a beatch to stop.Hope I have the strength you have had so far to get me thru too!
You go ........... :-if you were to take a couple of packs of cigs and put them in a pail of water, and let it stand for a couple of days, all the nicotine and chemicals would come into the water...

and, if that water fell onto the ground do you know

they would have to call a hazardous swatt team in to clean up the toxic mess? and your putting that into your mouth when you smoke cigs.

not to mention the temperature of a cigarette, basically your heating up your tongue and throat and lungs with a hot chemical that is way above body tempt.

feel your tongue right now with your own tongue, you will see it is very tough, thats from smoking...dont smoke, and keep going forward...your tongue will be nice and soft in a couple of months.
