Great that you have taken a step to value your health!
So I say first get clear on why you are stopping?
It is hard to stop doing something that harms you, and much more powerful and effective to start doing that serves you.
So look at the you who does not smoke, what does he have that you want? Make a list. What is the overall goal. not to be smoke free, but what is the overall gain, make this your goal!
Next what positive habit can you replace it with. Your body is not stupid if it feels like it is dependent on, and gets joy from something, then it will not let it go easily. So you need to entice it by inviting it to something better. ( Food is not a good idea, or you will have another problem).
Keep structures around you that remind you of the positive gains you are getting, and use the money you save as part of this pro-active reward scheme. So postcards of places you will go with your money, Blue skies, windy days. Active days out with your daughter that you can-t do when you are smoking. Also be clear of the things that you associate with smoking, and try to replace or avoid them especially in the beginning
The point is that your approach to it is in fact perhaps more important that the way you do it. If you feel victimized it will be hard but if you feel empowered to reaching a positive experience, or way of life, then you will do it for the sake of that!
So Pro-active not Re-active. Pro-active you will be moving towards a new positive action. Re-active means you will continue to take the same actions.
Hope this helps, and good luck. You and your family deserve the life that is possible when you are at your best health!Use the patch! It may cost a little but once you go through the program it is over with! I quit completely with the patch 1 and a half years ago and Ive never felt better. Quit now while you really want to as will power and self desire is at the centre of our ability to shake the evil habit!!!!!!!!!!you can see an acupuncturist who practices breaking addictions. there are recognized protocols for ear acupuncture (look up NADA, for an example) that are to help break not only smoking addiction, but many other types of psychological, physical and substance addictions.
acupuncture may also help to alleviate some of the problems that you may have developed from smoking such as coughing, sinus congestion, post nasal drip, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
I would also recommend positive activity, that is constructive activity that you can do to keep your mind off of smoking like exercising, meditating, dog walking, knitting, etc...pretty much anything thats not smoking. I know many people who have broken their smoking addiction through meditation practices, and have had many patients visit the clinic i work and go to school at for smoking addiction and its related problems with great success.
I would avoid using patch, gum or lozenge therapy because you risk becoming addicted to those methods of nicotine absorbtion as well. Nicotine is so difficult to quit because it is able to occupy almost all of the neuroreceptors in our body, and it is readily absorbable.
I am glad that you have recognized this as a health risk to you and your child. Good luck on quitting smoking (and nicotine)! Please see your doctor. Also see NicotineBusters, a Yahoo group focused on quitting smoking. My last Cig was last Friday. I had laser treatment done. It helped some with the physical but the mental is all up to you.
But I will tell you drink lots of water and set your goal for 72 hours takes that long to get the nicotine out of your system. There is no pill, patch or anything that is going to my you quit just you. I-m still fighting the mental but I keep thinking of all the reasons I quit for. I could light one up right now but I-m telling myself NO NO NO. If I start now I would have to start all over. With cig prices going up I can-t afford it, Keep track of just how much money you spend on cig. Bet that would help you stop
By the way I-m 45 and started smoking at the age of 15Hello there..
I-m a smoker too..Like you, I-m having the same problems as well.
Well, currently, I-m cutting down, hopefully one day I will stop. Well to quit smoking doesn-t only depend on medication or patches etc. You also need your strong will power to help you through this stage. At first I smoke 1 and half packets a day. But now I smoke 3 sticks of ciggarettes a day. Still not good enough though. I want to quit. You must have the will power and strong determination. Whenever I feel like smoking, I try to keep myself busy and keep my mind off ciggarettes. Also, whenever I finish my meal time,(usually I will smoke a stick of ciggarette) but now I eat a slice of fruit of drink soups to kill the time and not to think of ciggarettes. When you are in the train or any place inconvenient for you to eat fruits, have a packet of minty sweets ready in your bag. My favourite pick is Mentos Mint flavour or Halls.
That-s what helped me to cut down on my cigarettes. Hopefully I can quit one day.
Hope my ways can help you too friend.

-Chanel-I quit 2 and a half years ago using the lozenge. I cut them into four quarters and took a quarter of a lozenge when I felt the need to smoke. It worked. Unfortunately I still am taking the lozenges (still a quarter at a time). I can-t wean myself away from them.
They are in any drugstore, Target or Walmart.
