I smoked maybe a few times (probably a pack) over the course of being a freshman to a junior in highschool. When i was a senior i smoked a bit more. Then i tried stopping on my own. I would do it because it controlled my anxiety so well, it would calm me down and let me be open and not shy or nervous.However when i get to the point of being very anxious and needing to calm down i crave a cigarrette. Its the only thing that calms me down. I caved in and have a few cigs a week ago. I know smoking is harmful though but i dont know what else can control my anxiety as well as this does. im not allowed anti - anxiety meds like xanax at all because i overdosed on them before.
I want to be clean and free of cigarrettes. Any advice?I was in exactly the same situation -- quit smoking, got over the withdrawal, and just didn-t want to live with that anxiety. What I did was to buy some Commit nicotine lozenges at the drugstore. It-s nicotine that causes that inimitable calming effect. Like cigarettes, they-re addictive, but they don-t harm your lungs.
Some of us are just born anxious, there was an interesting article on that in the New York Times Magazine a week or two ago.Well congratulations on your decision to stop!!
One method I read about: Choose a day. Far enough ahead to prepare for it, but no too far ahead because you might change your mind. Don-t discuss it with anyone. When that day comes, wake up, and say -NO!-
So much easier said than done. But I-ve heard that works. Also, carrot sticks about the same length as a cigarette are good to have around.try prescription Chantix! it works!the patch...that-s what i used. If your anxiety is to the point you must smoke ...get counseling.yeah its tough if you are an anxious person. Partially what calms you down when you smoke is the fact you focus and control your breathing. But obviously the nicotine is a help too. Im an anxious person and i used to smoke i got a drug from my doctor which helped but we have free healthcare here so if your U.S that may not be possible to get. The thing to remember is that
1 cigs are adding to your anxiety. smoking is like wewaring bad shoes so it feels goood when you take them off. theres no medicinal benefit.
2 you gotta tough it out for about 3 and a half weeks then trust me its a shitload easier

You could try out a Christian church and also see about their weekly Bible study group to learn about God-s will for your life. You can pray to God about your daily life.I know that you-ve probably heard this a million times, but the only person who can help you is yourself. Just stop, simple as.
One thing that inspired my ol- friend Shane to stop smoking (he smoked 30 rollies a day), was Axl Rose. Axl once stated that he would never let drugs take over his life; what he said was- -I won-t F***ing allow it-.
Every time Shane wanted to light up, he just thought to himself, -I won-t let a bloody rolly ruin my lungs, I won-t f***ing allow it-. He stopped in one day. End of story.
If you really want to stop smoking that much, then you shouldn-t need to be asking these questions, you should know that it-s bad and give up.
at the end of the day, all you need is the balls to stop, simple as. The human body is absolutely unique and powerful, and if you-re gonna let a bit of paper with some herbs in, ruin it for you, then you are weak.Well, for a lot of people, smoking is simply an oral fixation. The little habit of bringing your fingers to your lips, inhaling, then exhaling is enough to make a person addicted even without the nicotine. However, I doubt this is the issue in regards to your case, but perhaps the placebo effect might work. I mean, it-s worth a shot, no?
Anyways, here-s what you can do: Get one of those white tubed BIC pens. Remove the ink stick inside the tube. Take the empty tube and cut it into the size of a cigarette. Next, get some cotton balls and twist them around small enough so that they-ll slide into the tube. Now you have yourself a make-shift faux-cigarette. Try smoking that for awhile and see how that works. Sure, it might seem silly, but if you can trick yourself into thinking it-s a cigarette, it might get the job done.
Aside from that, all I can think of is possibly getting some counseling.
