they are bright, they know all the effects etc, but they just don-t want to quit.As everyone else has told you a smoker will only quit when they are good and ready to quit and not until.
I am currently smoke free for six months after having smoked for thirty yrs.
Now having said that I can tell you it is NOT an easy journey to make. Nicotine is an extremely addictive drug, and not only do you have the drug addiction you also have the hand to mouth addiction.
Soooooooooooo not one thing you say or do is going to make someone quit ciggies.
That is a choice they have to make all on their own.
In fact I know someone who is dying from colon cancer, her liver is full of cancer nodes now and she has a colostomy bag.....and she-s still puffin away.........
Tell you friend you love them, and wish they would quit smoking for THEIR healths sake, then drop the topic.
It-s all you can do, no matter how intelligent a person is addiction is a strong hold over everything.
May the joy, hope, peace and love of the season be with you.A person that doesn-t want to quit, doesn-t. no need to waste your time.only the smoker can make that decision.. The more you rag him about it the worse it gets. He is addicted. If you haven-t been there, you can-t understand.there is no way. the smoker has to decide all on their ownWhats the best way to persuade someone who doesnt want to stop smoking to stop? -

I know it takes about 10 years after you stop smoking for the risk of lung cancer to go away but how long for the risk of tongue and throat cancer, heart attacks and strokes? An AWESOME site( www.whyquit.com )this site will not only inform you but it will show you some SERIOUS reality pictures. If you still smoke after seeing this site then you may need your head examined? Please go check it out and let me know if it answers your question. I couldn-t believe what I was seeing. VERY SCAREY but reality! Good luck if your trying to quit and Congrats! if you already quit. From figures I have seen (sorry don-t know the link) the added risks linked to smoking reduce almost immediately.
Whilst you have done damage to your body by smoking, having given up you now only have at a very slightly heightened risk compared to someone who has never smoked.
Compared to people who continue to smoke your risks are vastly reduced.
This goes for all smoking related diseases not just cancer. The risk of canser is only 8% higher for those who smoke than those who don-t. Lung cancer is NOT soley attributed to smoking...that is just the anti-smoking propoganda.
As for quiting I have read less that 1 year to remove the added risk.
Congratulations on quiting...assuming you did. I smokes from age 13 to 32. Quiting was the best thing I ever did.It doesn-t just disappear, its there forever. Once you stop, it just doesn-t increase.the risk never goes away. people who have never smoked in their life are at risk from lung cancernot only smokers get Cancer you know/////////////////Oh my you sound cheery! How long does it take to get over the risk of cancer after smoking? -
Anybody got any advice on stopping smoking? -
Anybody got any advice on stopping smoking? -
Throw away all cigarettes and do not buy an emergency pack.
Get your head into the right frame of mind.
Write a list of all the reasons you want to give up and put it up somewhere where it is seen by you frequently.
Take each day as it comes - one day at a time. The cravings seem to come a bit like a contraction (if youve had a baby youll understand, lol, kind of like a wave coming over you - so ride them out. Keep busy in the first week - its a hard one.
Throw away ashtrays and stay away from your friends / family who are smokers - they will tempt you too much.
If willpower alone doesnt help try patches, gum, lozenges - all the different types of replacement therapy but dont get hooked on them - you do have to wean off them too.
Visit a lung cancer unit at the hospital or view images / stories on the internet of what people have gone through / died of because of smoking.
Join a NHS or local support group. There are also telephone help lines.
Do something really special with the money you save and keep a diary/journal of your experience. Maybe start your own website.
It is hard and it is hell sometimes but if you manage you will feel great about yourself.
Good luckReally wish you all the best , stay strong minded and focused about why you are giving up - it will all be a distant memory not too long from now. Well done U x x x x

I just woke up one day decided to quit - quit Withdrawals lasted about 2 months You probably can find a better wayDo it, lost my mum - dad, and a third workmate died from the deathsticks just before last Christmas, he-d found the love of his life a few months before. With very little warning beforehand, just started coughing up blood, died of lung cancer before he could get married.Yes if you ever have to give up anything you must replace that time with something else to take your mind off it. My house, drawers, cupboards, etc had never been so tidy! I joined a gym and went swimming etc. Don-t just sit there or you will eat or start smoking again..Laura,
If you are serrious about giving up smoking take some good advice that worked for me.
I purchased a book called EASYWAY to stop smoking by Allan Carr. It costs about £7.00, and explains you need to know about quitting. There are no shock tactics, no being treated like a child, just good solid explanations as to why we smoked in the first place. I was a 30 a day smoker for 30 years, and i have not smoked now for 4 weeks. I don-t miss it, i dont need it, and i dont want it.
Good luck, i really do hope you can do the right thing.Always leave your cigs. and lighter in another room when at home. Throw away all your ash trays. Suck on mints or chew gum. Keep yourself busy too busy to go to the other room to get your cigs. Or just plain say I can do this and throw the cancer ridden things away and get a fresh start. Good LuckWhenever you get the urge, drink grapefruit juice and then smoke. It will make cigarettes taste nasty, and you will have a Pavlovian memory that you hate cigarettes. Worked like a charm for me.Yes because I quit 2 1/2 months ago. First you have to cold turkey it nothing else seems to work and most of all you really have to want to quit. I chewed alot of gum and the best thing for the urges was drinking alot of water. Also do not make any big decisions for about 1 week. After the first three days things will start to get better and by the second week you will star to over come the urges easier. It is hard at times but after the 1st. month Istarted to forget about it all together. It isn-t that bad but it really is up to you to really want to stop. Good luck and God bless.too late for me as well.
i would say dont start!!lots of willpower bab, good luckI quit smoking almost two years ago, it was HARD! You have to start out having a reason to quit, then you have to lower the amount you smoke and slowly quit. And don-t beat yourself up if you have a relapse, just resume quitting again. And no matter what anyone says, it does not help to set a date. Good luck!i stopped smoking a month ago and i feel so good. i did it cold turkey. just focus on how great you feel and when you get the urge to smoke, walk, run, exercise. just look at it like a wave cresting....just -ride out- the wave and after a bit, the urge to smoke will subside. you-ll have more energy, get less winded and your skin will improve. good luck...if i can do it, anyone can!I-ve recently quit smoking myself. I just stopped buying them. Do you have kids? Look at them and they-ll give you enough reason to quit. My parents both smoke, and my dad has some pretty bad breathing issues because of it. He asked me to quit for him everytime I lit one around him. He-s been smoking for years and is too addicted to quit, but he didn-t want me to end up like him. So this past Christmas, I quit as my present to him and my Mom. He said it was the best present he-s ever gotten, and I-m glad I could give it to him. With the price of a pack going up so much, I-m sure there-s better things you could spend your money on. Get your hair/nails done with that money that you would usually spend in a month, or save it up for something you-ve been wanting for a while to reward yourself.Try Nicerrette chewing gum it might sound stupid but it`s exellent.I`ve been stopped a good ten years now and it helped me.Dont forget will power too-good luck!stop buying themyep, ive got one and it works.

I need help, what can I do to stop smoking?Recreational use is completely fine, in my opinion. The health risks are mild, at worst. You can-t overdose. It doesn-t make you act belligerently. It doesn-t cause physical addiction.
However,if you feel that you have a problem.. You probably do.. If it causes problems in your life (legal, love, education, etc..), then you should probably cut back or quit entirely. It-s up to you my man! Here are some links and phone numbers that might help you find some support.

AA California- 905-688-9052Are you my brother? Seriously, Ryan, dude, is this you? Because you have a problem. It is okay as a recreational habit but full time is a no go. You are the reason they say mary jane is a gateway drug. Please stop, Ryan. Put it down it ain-t worth it. Don-t make me tell Momma.
If not Ryan, sorry you just sound like him. He can-t put down the -J-.
Best of luck to you. Pot is good.Really? Seriously? You don-t see this much on here. Most are quite happy to puff along. Like the people that live below me. They must toke up 3 or 4 times a day min. And it wafts up into my apartment and into my kids room. Just lovely. Can-t stand the smell and I wish they wanted to quit.
