Any practical advice on how to stop over eating after giving up smoking.? -
Have been a none smoker for a year now, at first really proud of myself, stopped smoking, felt great, did not over eat at first, but now can not stop eating the hunger is there all the time. Tried all the normal things, drinking water, long walks, even going to bed early, but wake up hungry in the night. Nothing medically wrong doc. assures me just self control needed, was able to quit smoking with self control, no aids at all just cold turkey, so why cannot do this with food.chew sugar free gum that is what i did it is cheap and it worksstock up on fruit i found this helped me if i got peckish i would eat that instead of sweet things cause you feel like you need 2 do something with your hands so try it an c how you go good luckxxxxgood luck!!!chew sugar free gum, eat fruit, and on a day where u dont feel like being overly healthy, sugar free jelly is always good, and surprisingly filling!1. Drink lots of water. Not only will this do wonders for your body (better skin, whiter eyes...) but it also stops you from feeling hungry when your not. Seriously, if you want to lose weight or stop eating, its all about the 2-5 liters of water a day.2. Chew gum. The sugar free stuff, its better for your teeth. Some people say that shewing gum can make hunger and cravings for food worse because with you chewing something but nothing goes into your tum, your brain gets confused or something. But it worked fine for me but be warned, some people disagree.
3. Exercise. Its true, i forget all about food when I have been exercising!!
4. Sweeties. Sucking on a boiled sweet may help... or you might find yourself just craving more....
5. Sabbotage your food. This is a strange one, I know, but it worked for me. When I was eating food I knew I didn-t want or when I just wasn-t hungry and I still ate, I began to sabbotage my food. Putting too much salt on a meal that you-ve made if you-re just bored, if you don-t like melted chocolate then leave it out in the sun........ you get my drift? After a while you stop wanting it if you know it tastes nasty!
And, above all else, knowledge is key. Did you know that it take approx 28 days to form or break a habit? So if you are used to smoking after every meal, and you stop smoking, after 28 days you won-t get the urge to smoke after a meal. It works, but just think of that. Try to look at the times or circumstances when you find yourself overeating, then try to change it or do something else. That way you don-t get that habit, and its easier to break.
Good luck!!!! xxI can relate to your problem. I quit smoking 8 yrs ago and i gained about 5 kilos after a few months. I suspect that my taste buds became cleaner or more alive i should say. I stayed that way until i had to buy bigger waist size pants because it was uncomfortable for me to stay in my old pants.
I decided to take up jogging and working out. At first i couln-t run for more than 100 meters at a time, but i kept at it and after a few months i was able to run 1 then 2 kms straight. It was at this time that my weight stated to drop until my weight stabilized to my present weight of 74-75 kgs. I lost 2- off my waist and i am now a size 34. My wife also stopped smoking and lately joined me and started jog/walking and lost 1 kg since starting 1 month ago. The additional benefits are that i can actually eat more now because i can burn the calories i consume. Please visit my blog at yahoo!360 entitled the middle aged runner-s blog by Mario Naz to see how running/jogging has become part of my life. Good luckMy brother gave up smoking a few years ago and found that sugar-free mints and chewing gum helped him a lot. Chewing gum however can make you hungry as it increases the gas in your stomach, I suggest the mints.
Another good thing to do is eat little and often things like low-fat yoghurt and fruit. Eat plenty of pumkin seeds, sunflower seeds and brazil nuts which are all very good sources of zinc and manganese which are very good at helping to curb and control sugar spikes and cravings. I got these ideas from watching the relentless but wonderful Gillian McKeith on, -You Are What You Eat!-. Good Luck!Firstly, well done for giving up smoking, it must be difficult to now have this eating craving instead. Perhaps during the day if you feel hungry suck on some boiled sweets? Just before you go to bed, try having a hot chocolate made with milk or just a glass of warm/hot milk - the idea is that milk will be more substantial than water and will possibly keep your stomach from having hunger pangs in the night.Well done for giving up, try chewing gum it worked for my partner.
