had 4 way heart oper in 2001- i have appointment with my heart dr. soonStarting with your cardiologist is fine but see a pulmonologist. They are the specialists in that area. One of the things that they will recommend is that you switch from chest breathing to diaphragmatic breathing. When you breath using the chest muscles the air exchange is primarilly in the upper lobes. Diaphragmatic breathing goes into the lower lobes and increases the amount of air exchanged. The problem in emphysema is not with the air in but with getting it out. So along with the diaphragmatic techniques are going to be purse breathing. That is a long slow exhalation. Doing that cuts down significantly in the turbulance in the lung and allows a better exhalation. You will most likely be seen either by a physical or respirational therapist. Good luck!In my experience they feel they have to say something to justify their existence.
Moderate emphysema is basically shortness of breath when doing strenuous activity. Frankly if I get to 80 with nothing more than that I-d be ecstatic. You-re already the best part of 4 years past the average life expectancy, I-d have thought you wouldn-t have been that worried about itI would go along w/ Richard, one other thing ask if you could go to -Respiratory Rehab-, this would be in consultation with a Pulmanologist of your Doctors choosing. They can help in teaching you how to breath healthy again and they have patients w/ heart ailments too, they also teach you about stress, Good luck bud.now what? now you live what remains of your life, good lord man, you are 80 years old, you-ve already exceeded a normal life span, probably because you did quit smoking 40 years ago. Would suggest that at your age, you should have learned by now to live each day as it comes. Not sure, but want to wish you the best of luck with everything.
I would suggest getting several different opinions from different doctors..
and try to find the one with the most experience in dealing with whatever you are going through.

I am taking Chantix to stop smoking. One side effect is nausea and I have it bad. How can I overcome it? -
I started taking the Chantix and after 2 weeks,I-m still vomiting when I take it. The good news is, it really does help,I-m not smoking.I need to stay on the program the full 12 weeks but if the vomiting doesnt stop,I dont know what I-ll do. I stopped taking the chantix to relieve the vomiting, now I-m sneaking cigarretes and I am so depressed. Is there any way to overcome the nausea? I am so upset and depressed. My husband is also quitting, the pills dont make him sick but he has trouble sleeping,I would gladly lose sleep instead of throwing up all the time. I feel so guilty but I am very weak and have zero willpower. Should I just stick it out or is there something I can do to avoid the nausea and throwing up? This is so important to me, thanks for any help.

Good Luck!salty crackers, that-s the oly thing it works for me when I have nausea, I had nausea today, my dentist pulled out a tooth and gave me vicodin, which made my horrible pain go away but made me nauseaus, Why don-t you try to start a new hobby? weather permitting maybe walks, painting, start a diary, a support group, just something to keep your mind busy and away from being depressed. I wish my husband would stop smoking cigarrettes too, it is so unhealthy. Keep trying, don-t give up...!!!! Good Luck..!!Think about an alternative. Throwing up isnt good. Go to the doctor and ask.You can try an over the counter anti-nausea medication like Emetrol or it-s generic equivalent. If that doesn-t help, then you might ask your doctor for some phenergan.
But other than that, I-m glad to hear Chantix helps with the no-smoking thing. Now to get my hubby to try it.If you are getting sick all the time I would stop taking it and switch to maybe a good patch.
Is there any instructions about taking it with food or not? It may be this pill is just not a good match for your body, and it messes with your stomach. When the side effects are worse than the actual thing you are trying to cure..... I would either stop taking it or switch to something different.
I had a few friends that just quit recently using patches, and in order to stop sneaking cigarettes they had to give themselves drastic punishments. Like one of my friends told herself if she had a cigarette she would had to shave her head. Tell everyone you live with, or tell friends who are with you alot, tell people at work...... if they see you going for one.... they can slap you! Give them permission to get after you for cheating! Sometimes we all need supervision... especially when overcoming an addiction that can be so hard stop.
THe fact that you and your husband are doing this together is great..... keep supporting each other, and try finding other things to do with each other that keep your mind off the smoking. Good Luck!!Maybe you should try nicotine patches instead of a pill. It worked for me ;) Good luck in whatever you decide to do, quitting is WELL worth the effortThats a great step that you are taking in deciding to stop smoking, but you are replacing one chemical for another...it is effecting your life and is leading to depression!!!! STOP!!! Dont take those stupid pills, patches, or gum, they are just another form of nicotine addiction!! You need to address the mental reason and physical addiction of smoking!
So there is this great product out there by “NewReality Life” that helped me stop smoking, and I haven’t had a single cigarette in over a year! This little device/mp3 player thing works on the Mind-Body connection thing they talk about in the book “The Secret.” This company seems to have been using that technology before the best-selling book did, and the designing psychologist supposedly pioneered the philosophy. This cool little portable device addresses your desire to smoke, and works with you to end your smoking addiction, not like those stupid hypnosis tapes that NEVER work. Plus you get these really cool little LED glasses which are unbelievably relaxing! You should check it out; they also do stuff like weight loss and stress reduction too!! They offer programs to battle all the dumb stuff this dumb pill is doing to your body!! Go Organic and natural in your treatment, while still remaining ultra effective!!
