Is chewing gum effective to stop smoking? -

Psycholigically?
and Physically (with nicotine)?I-m an ex smoker who gave up many years ago, I was lucky enough to be able stop by will power alone but I accept that many cannot.

I-m a recovered alcoholic but didn-t have the will power to stop drinking so I went into rehab three years ago and have been -dry- since.

I know nicotine gum helps some people as do the patches, it-s worth a try, at least they are less harmful than smoking, just make sure that you stick to a program of weaning yourself off the gum.

Doctor-s surgeries are full of helpful free information on quitting the habit, nibbling on sticks of carrot or celery that have been kept in the -fridge not only gives you something to do with your hands (which is part of the psychology) but also stops you eating sweets and putting on weight as your sense of smell and taste return to normal.

Good luck.I-ve heard for some people it does help. I used to use Nicotine gum, but the first time around I started back up. The next time I used it, I finally quit. I found that chewing cinnamon gum helped alot. I-ve heard there-s something in it which helps calm the cravings, at least it did for me. But if you start out with the nicotine gum, start out with the lowest dose first if you-re a light smoker. If you-re a heavy smoker, (two to three packs a day), then you might need a higher dose. It helps to take the edge off so you can get through the day. The first three weeks are the worst, but when you get past that, then you-ll do ok. It will take time, but if you-re a smoker and want to quit, you will eventually do it. I-m glad I did. I smoked 13 years before I quit. It will be ten years for me this Christmas Day.Gum is rubber, more or less, and does not in any way assist beyond the oral fixation. My Dad kept a small bag of cut up vegetable, carrots, celery, etc, to chew on when he was urged. As he tells it, he only did it once (quit) and I never saw evidence to the contrary. It may seem a small penance to chew celery but do you realize how quickly you can become accustomed to a new thing you don-t initially enjoy? The deeper effects you seek are in a zip lock bag : ) May your intention begin definitively and carry on indefinitely. No! The best way is to simply not to smoke.Trust in yourself and in your own will to be healthy.
I was a committed smoker for forty years and never even considered stopping until I had a scare,I simply stopped!! And have never looked back.I used to smoke about fifty a day of DRUM rollups, very tarry and quite strong, but believe me when I say it was nowhere as bad as I thought or was led to believe.Trust in yourself and you can do it! And without any substitutesI think it is mnore psychological then physical. It just takes your mind off of it. And be prepared to buy a lot of packs of gum. My friend chew like 5 packs of gum a day.Yeah but you-d be addicted to chewing gum.Yes, but stopping to chew gum is the real trick.

Has anyone stopped smoking and actually been happy about it? -

i have given up, cut down etc, but i was never happy with the thoughts of never ever having just one when i wanted, so are smokers or ex smokers ever happy when they decide to give up, or do they just learn to live with their desicion...i gave up smoking for 7 week i was really happy about it so i celebrated with a glass of wine and a cigI am 3.5 weeks not smoking and there are times when I feel really good about not smoking ever again, but I am still having moments when it just sucks that I can-t ever have a smoke again.

The moments are getting fewer and farther, and I think you do eventually get to where you are perfectly comfortable with it.

The initial thought of unhappiness are actually the addiction. The first 7 days, I was scared to death that I would live with that intense desire to smoke forever. That I would always have to fight it. But it gets better.

I-m sure you know the benefits of quitting but here are a few I want to share: my complexion is amazing since I quit (and looking better everyday), I have already saved over $100, and I don-t get stressed with my kids when we are in a place that I can-t go out to smoke. Bonus: my 6 year old is so proud of me he tells me nearly everyday.

Good luck to you! You can do it.I work in Law Enforcement in the Central Jersey area, On 9/11 Iwas home sick with another chest cold from smoking and couldn-t go.
I stopped smoking then and now should the need arise , i will be able to respond.
If someone can stop smoking on the Worst day of terrosism we knew you can too.
Keep the Faith !i quit and i surpose i feel like i will never be able to have a puff again but il know if i do il feel guilty as all the hard work will be thrown out the windowOne of the top five best things I have ever done in life.I smoked for eleven years before I quit in 1994. I-m very glad that I did. Think of all the money I would have spent on smokes!I stopped smoking over 3 years ago and have never felt better, in my heath and my pocket, and now i cant stand the smell of it. I can smell it strongly on peoples clothes, and thinking that is how i used to smell is enough of a deterrent to never smoke againI loved to smoke, and it was the hardest thing I ever did, and I still miss it occasionally, but not having that monkey on your back is worth it, also when your told you have cancer it is a great quit smoking deterrent.God I hope so. This is how I feel. I can-t imagine stopping and not missing it! Going to buy Allen Carrs book and really try to beat this... hope you manage to do the same, think of all the spare money!!there are some withdrwal symptoms right?I gave up about 27 years ago and have never regretted it. It is one of the best things I ever did. Yes, it was extremely difficult at the time but the rewards are more than worth it a million times. Am I happy? Oh yeeeeeeeeeeessss!i stopped smoking over a year ago for health reasons
i-ve noticed several improvements to my general health and well being
smoking just makes you smelly, stressed and unfitI would love to go back to cigars but my wife would stick -em all up my ----- first time she caught me sleeping. They are so gooooooood and the Cubans?..........to die for!I have now not smoked for 4 weeks and I this time I feel like I have really done it and given up after a few half hearted attempts.

The difference is that this time I really WANT to, rather than just feeling that I should.

Like you I tried to stop before, but because I enjoyed smoking so much the thought of not smoking just didn-t sound like fun, so I would have the odd one or two on special occasions, or just smoke when I was out with friends, and pretty soon I was smoking full time again.

However, this time I just don-t really fancy them anymore. I am quite happy with the thought that I will never smoke again.

As I said, I think to quit successfully, you have got to get to a time in your life when you really want it.I gave up 37 years ago and have never regretted it. The thing to be happy about is that you are no longer at as much risk of serious diseases.Yes I gave up full-time smoking 30 year ago, gave up smoking when drinking 20 year ago and gave up cigars with port after fancy meal 10 year ago. Still enjoy smelling some smoke when others smoke, some tobacco smells sh!tI LOVE NOT SMOKING!! I smoked for years- and had bronchitis constantly! I quit when my son was born and hated it at first- now I love it. I can-t stand to smell stale cig smoke anymore... I try to not even go where smoking is because the smell makes me sick now. My husband still smokes- but not in the house. My mum quit smoking and she-s been a horrible ***** ever since.
But she-s much healthier now, so i guess thats good.well congrats i quit 6 months ago and i feel great well it was hard i quit cold turkey my husband still smokes and that made it a little hard but I-m still doing well i think the first 3 months i really wanted a cigg but i kept chewing gum and eating the hard mint candy i think what made me decide to quit was when id wake up in the middle of night tring to catch my breath and that-s when i knew it was time to quit so in the process of quitting smoking i thought about waking up and tring to catch my breath so needless to say i can breath alot better and i dont feel tired like i did when i smoked well best of luck to youive got the willpower of a gnat. i know its unhealthy but i like a smoke, stopped for a week once and then caved in.That would be hard because smoking releases feel good endorphins into your bloodstream.I stopped smoking ciggies and other stuff 6 years ago when my wife was due her our first child.......Am I any happier? No, am I fatter?...Yes, do I still have cravings? Yes.....would I still smoke if I could.....NOT IN A MILLION YEARS..its stinks, its disgusting, It costs a load of money and it is bloody awful for your health and those around you.

It-s not easy to stop and as I say, six years on and I still have a craving, probably once a day but its not so bad i feel desperate like you do at first. I think the biggest hurdle was the 3 day mark, when I was past 1 week I was chuffed, then when it got to 3 weeks I knew I had beaten the habit. Oh i was smoking 40 a day and just stopped, didn-t cut down, didn-t use nicotine replacement nada, nothing.
