Statistics. They are more scary than you think.Try a different approach

Ask what would it take for them to stop?

Find a good reason to quit, until a person finds that reason
it will be very difficult

I quit after 55+ years and a 5 pack a day habit

This was probably my 10th + time tryingvery difficult. I was a heavy smoker for 25 years and I have been fighting my addiction for the last 5 with some degree of success, I think I now have a bit more ammo than when tried to give up the first times.
So I guess the best way would be to get them in contact with simpathetic ex smokers. At the beginning I did read a good ebook, but there are some bad ones out there so don-t go out shelling money. Also, if you could get the person involved in some physical excercize and get them to stick to it then they-ll automatically smoke less to have more breath.
For instance I have some dumbells next to the couch and so long as I keep on using them througout the whole movie, then I don-t feel so guilty about being a couch potato in the evening and I do lose about 1kg or more every 6 movies. Doing this keeps my mind on the dumbells and the weight losing thing and so I manage to put the craving from the smoking way off my mind, the more I sweat the less I want to smoke. I-ve been off 4 months this time, however I am cheating a bit as I do chew nicorette.... still, it-s a battle in progress and the more we battle the better fighters we become.have a fat kid challange them to a foot race and let them see for themself what makes you breath harder. You can-t. People have to want to stop smoking on their own but that doesn-t mean you can-t remind them how unhealthy, stinky, nasty, unattractive, etc. it is.Try to get them to think of the children that are negatively impacted by their poor choices. The kids lives are much more important than a brief high.Having someone stop smoking is a difficult task for both the smoker and the helper. I believe unless the smoker truly wants to stop smoking, it will be hard to truly convince them. It-s well known the problems associated with smoking, as they are frequently presented in society today. Reinforce these problems that smoking causes, and hopefully soon they will realize the problems it causes on the body. They have to want to quit. My grandfather had lung cancer and still smoked even while he was on oxygen. My mom was given the news yesterday that she has lung cancer, again. She survived five years since the first diagnosis. She smoked through chemo/radiation. She never stopped, she has smoked for 60yrs and this time, the diagnosis is too late, the tumors are too large. She doesn-t believe smoking causes this problem, or that it could be the sole cause. She believes it could be the weeds she rolled up as a child, and lit them and smoked them. Or the smog from when she lived in LA, the exhaust from when she worked at a landfill, and the car exhaust pipes came out the driver-s side and covered her in fumes. It will never be the smoking, nor will she take any responsibility. She was given the clear signal last November, the doctor did not do an xray before releasing her. She now believes that had he done that, the tumor would have been found, and her life would have been saved. Possibly, but it still has to do with the smoking, to me, to her doctors. But not to her. How do you convince someone? I don-t honestly know. I write this as I smoke my cigarette, it-s disgusting and killing my mom and myself. Can I quit? I-ve tried three times in the past year, each time only lasting a couple months and that was still sneaking one with my morning coffee. I know the risks, I see the devastation on a daily basis, I hear her choking for air, I know death is soon, yet I still haven-t been able to quit, and I am angry with myself about that. How do you convince someone.................................…Projectile vomit on them every time you see them do it.I told them, --If you keep smoking, you will kill yourself, you become an athiest, and God hates you. I hate you and i want to kill you. You disgust me with you smoking crap. I dont want to see it anymore, and please, burn in hell becuase I hate you.--UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAVE TO WANT TO STOP ! NICOTINE IS A DRUG AND IT-S VERY ADDICTIVE. I-VE HEARD THERE IS A NEW MEDICATION (Chantix)! ON THE MARKET THAT-S SUPPOSED TO WORK GREAT.
