HELP PLEASE hypnosis amp; smoking does it work? -
I m thinking about going to a group hypnosis session...does anybody know if this really works...I know you have to want to stop smoking(which I do) and be receptive to hypnosis...but is it succesfulAs a hypnotherapist I-ve treated a lot of people who wanted to stop smoking and can say it is extremely effective. It-s a habit formed on a sub-conscious level and so hypnosis is great at dealing with it.Group sessions I am not so sure about as you don-t get the individual treatment. Yes, they are cheaper than one on one sessions, but shop arround as I know prices vary from £40 up to £500 here for exactly the same session and the £40 one is just as effective as the £500 one.
You could also use a hypnosis or subliminal program as these can be very effective. I use these with some of my clients and people have given up smoking from the cd-s alone.
The following information was taken from New Scientist vol 136 issue 1845-31 October 92, page 6: Cognitive reactions to smoking relapse by Elliot Wald, Tami J Eggelston PhD - Frederick Gibbson PhD.
-Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little.
Smokers are coming under increasing pressure to quit. Earlier this month the Institute of Actuaries published the results of a study it commissioned which showed that the mortality rate for smokers is twice as high as for non-smokers, and that on average a smoker dies 6 years earlier than a non-smoker. Surveys suggest that three in four smokers would like to give up, according to the anti-smoking campaign Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). To find the most effective way to give up smoking, frank Schmidt and research student Chockalingam Viswesvaran of the University of Iowa carried out a meta-analysis, statistically combining the results of more than 600 studies covering almost 72,000 people from North America, Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe. By combining the results from so many separate studies, the meta-analysis enables the real effectiveness of each technique to be picked out from the statistical -noise- that often blights studies involving smaller numbers of subjects. The results, published in the current issue of the journal of, show that the average success rate for all methods was 25%: that is, only about two in five smokers is likely to succeed using methods covered by the study. Patients told they had serious cardiac disorders, and so a clear incentive to stop immediately, had the highest quitting rate, at 36 per cent. But for most smokers the most effective technique was hypnosis, which included 48 studies covering over 6000 smokers, gave an average success rate of 80 per cent for this method.
-Combination- techniques, combining, for example, exercise and breathing therapy came second with a success rate of 29 per cent. Smoke aversion, in which smokers have their own warm, stale cigarette smoke blown back into their faces, achieved a 25 per cent success rate, followed by acupuncture at 24 per cent.
The least successful method turned out to be advice from GPs, which appears to convince virtually no one to give up. Self-help, in the form of books or mail-order advice, achieved modest success around 9 per cent, while nicotine gum was little better at 10 per cent.
-We found that involvement of physicians did not have as big an impact as we expected-, said Schmidt, -We speculate that the reason is that it is the content of the treatment that matters, and not the status of the person giving it.- David Pollock, director of ASH, said he was surprised by the success of hypnosis, which anecdotal evidence had suggested was not very effective. One organization not surprised by the results is the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis. Christopher Pattinson, the society-s academic chairman, said that current hypnosis techniques are a far cry from their popular image of music-hall tricks involving swinging fob watches. The latest relaxation techniques achieve success rates of up to 80 per cent from a single session, he said-
Wishing you all the best
JasonTry quitting on your own first. I smoked for 15 years and was up to 3 packs a day and then one day decided it was time for me to quit and I did. I used the nicotine patches (walmart brand is cheaper) for maybe a month and a half then went off of those. Believe me if I can quit you can.....toothpicks and straws to chew on and play with (keep your fingers and mouth occupied), gum, mints (I found those soft little mints like you can find at parties worked great) try to use sugar free when possible, I kept alot of the 100 cal pack snackers on hand cause you will be reaching for stuff. I am still going through some withdraws but am so glad I quit! My skin is better, my sense of smell is better and now I absolutely cannot stand the smell of cig smoke at all! GOODLUCK!!!Depends on how much you will get out of it.But if it-s costing you money you may as well stay home.Unless you really want to quit. The patch works as long as you wear it.I-ve had everything you can mention and it didn-t stop me but guess I love smoking and I find it a better nerve pill than shelling out money and big money for nerve pills.Go for it but you still need willpower.I can-t answer that on a smokers- level , never having smoked - but I can tell you that hypnosis works . Not a one-time thing , but a series or regular hypnosis sessions . I would say daily for a smoking habit until you kick it . You may want to try a professional ( in person ) for the first time but that is not absolutely necessary . Find a book store that has self-hypnosis tapes or Cd-s and follow the instructions . Hypnosis can be used for a variety of things .I-ve tried both methods and find them equally effective .is your question: does hypnosis work for curing smoking? the answer is NO. hypnosis is not what you see in the movies (and what this company will claim it can do) hypnosis is a very misunderstood and highly confusing phenominon that has EXTREEMELY limited uses as a treatment option (mostly used JUST in relaxing a patient in order to understand there problems, no represed memory bull no convincing you your a chicken etc thats all bull)
if you question is will i stop smoking if i go to this group and try hypnosis? you have a better chance of it then without!
why the seemeingly controdictory answers? simple. those who work with others EVEN JUST TALKING TO A FRIEND are more likely to quit then someone who goes it alone. wnat a method thats more likely to work still? get one of those online no smoking packets from phillip morris (why not there being forced to spend money offering this information) and fill it out as you work. it only reinforces your current dedication. want more help? use the niccotine gums and patches (no niccotine is not bad for you it-s just addictive, inhaling burning poison compounds which happens to be your current intake method IS. just as taking caffiene this way would be bad also)
don-t waste your time and money on hypnosis. go with a local (free!) group and talk to your friends and family and even coworkers. buy the gums and patches and work on it with dedication. WANTING to quit is probably the most important step.best medicine to stop smoking is accupuncture 100% effective
