Help getting my dad to stop smoking? -
My dad is a heavy smoker, he has smoked since my age (15). He has tried to quit, but has never succeeded. He is 35 and he is diabetic, and slightly overweight (He has developed a large gut due to medical disorders, I won-t go into detail).
I am very scared and concerned for his health, he smokes about a pack and a half a day. And I-m just really scared that he is going to pass away soon, I have had dreams of him dying due to cancer time and time again. It-s almost as if I can see it happening.
I want him to live to see me grow up (along with my 3 other younger brothers) and see my grandchildren.
I really do not want to lose him to cigarettes...
So please, give me some advice that I can use to get him to stop smoking...please...Good luck......he has to want to quit, bottom line.i had th same problem with my dad but he was less addicted.
hide all his smokes. tell him thatt its for his own good and keep nagging him untill he gives up. i hope this will help you it helped me.
i -ll pray for him. good luck.
:)Alex:
Smoking is a scary addiction. I quit and it was one of the hardest things I ever did. I buried both my parents due to smoking, so I really get your fear. He-s gotta want to quit. He-s got to believe it will kill him sooner, rather than later. Share your thoughts and feelings with him, but know that it-s not about whether or not he loves you or cares about your feelings. He-s really trapped and it-s VERY hard. The American Lung Association has some good programs, and there are drugs that will help that he can get from his doctor. But please understand that it-s not something that YOU can get him to do....it-s gotta be his choice. Just share your thoughts and fears with him and let him know how much you love him and want him to live to see you grow up...grandchildren and the future may help him see he is cutting his life short. Bless you for caring enough to post.Help getting my dad to stop smoking? -
Have you stopped smoking cigarettes? -
Have you stopped smoking cigarettes? -
I really want to....I have for a week at a time. If you-ve succeed, can you give me some hints on how to take your mind off the desire to smoke? I made till 4 pm the other day...then I was jonesing really bad.I know people who took that new pill and they loved it. They said it has some type of Welbutrin in it which is good for depression, so they were happier, they didn-t eat like people do when they quit and some even lost some weight.
I took a smoking cessation class through my work once. It never took, but they had good advice:
Change your habits. Usually smoking is habit related, ie while you are on the phone, during a break, etc. So if you don-t do those things you won-t think about it as much.
Keep your hands busy. I know a lady that carried an orange with her to play with.
Drink orange juice. Supposedly orange juice takes away the cravings. They said to have OJ next to your bed when you wake up if you are the kind of person that rolls over and lights up in the morning.
Chew gum.
I think the biggest thing is trying to remember (and convince yourself) that a craving only lasts for 3-4 minutes. If you can make it past that, you should be OK, at least till then next time!
And here is one that I thought was funny. Put your cigarette in between a differet set of fingers. Like instead of index and middle, do middle and ring. Once you become comfortable doing that switch to two other fingers, then switch hands and start over.
Last but not least, I was told that nicotine only stays in your body for 3 days. After that, it-s all psychological.
I hope any of this stuff helped. Good luck!!!!I have never smoked a cigarette a day in my life.... and I am glad.
This past February, I lose one of my most favorite clients to lung cancer. She was dead within 6 weeks of diagnosis. She had been a smoker. She left behind 2 children....and a husband.
I can not for the life of me figure out why people do this to themselves.
Please quit.TRY CIGARS....THEY ARE BETTER AND YOU DON-T INHALE.I quit cold turkey too. I did get a mild anti-depressant from the doctor. Kind of took the edge off in the beginning. It-s easy to stay off the cigs cause now I have money in my purse all the time.Try with the patch. I was a young kid when a friend turned me on
to cigarettes. He told me to inhale the smoke and I almost choked
to death. Never inhaled one since so I never got addicted.
I-ve done a pipe and cigars but never inhaled those either.
I guess my advice to anyone reading this is to stay away from them but if you do,do not inhale the smoke.I still smoke, but I noticed that when I-m online I don-t smoke. When I read I don-t smoke. (I read alot). Try getting a hobby. It took me a long time to quit (and I didn-t smoke that long). If you were to ask my doctor, he would tell you that I was a smoker. If you were to ask a real smoker, I was not a smoker. I did a pack a day for about two years. Marlboro lights. What got me off of smoking was Skoal smokeless chew. I would advise you not to go smokeless because that is worse than smoking. What got me off of chew was a product like chew that was made of mint leaves and had flavorings in them. It was still chew but it was NOT tobacco. There was NO nicotine in it. It was basically candy. I have not seen the product for a few years and do not know if it is still out there or not.
If you cannot find it, try some sugar free candies. The sugared ones will give you cavities. You will be eating them constantly. You can do it, I know you can. If you slip, that-s O.K.. Just start again. Keep trying and look at all the money you will save. Good luck.i stopped smoking when my lungs hurt every time i inhaled cigarette smoke. did it cold turkey. i do buy cigarettes to put into my potted plants, the nicotine kills the bugsI quit when I found out I was pregnant.Sorry, I haven-t been able to quit yet.i smoked for 26 years and stopped cold turkey in october.... if i can do and my husband did the same thing in january... we both quit cold turkey
the gums and patches don-t do anything its a waste of money... YOU CAN DO ITHave you stopped smoking cigarettes? -
How long do I have to stop smoking for a clean blood gas test? -
How long do I have to stop smoking for a clean blood gas test? -
That depends on how long you smoked and how much you smoked. But I-ll give you an example: I-m 62 years old and smoked a pack a day for 40 years. My blood gases are perfect. No problems at all. My lungs on the other hand are a mess. I have bullous emphysema, interstitial fibrosis from the multiple pneumonias, chronic bronchitis and am steroid dependent. Can-t walk across the room without getting short of breath.
Am I painting a picture here for you? Blood gases are a poor indicator of lung disease unless they show some abnormality. But if they are normal it does not mean you are free of disease. This is a testament to the resiliency of the lungs and the amount of reserve capacity we have.
Pulmonary function testing is the gold standard for lung disease. Get your doctor to order a full set of tests and see where you stand. How long do I have to stop smoking for a clean blood gas test? -
