How do you help a loved one quit smoking? -

How do you help a loved one quit smoking? -

HOW DO I HELP MY HUSBAND STOP SMOKING HE IS ALSO A WELDER SO IM SO AFRIAD ONE DAY HE WILL GET LUNG CANCER . HES YOUNG ONLY 22 SO I KNOW IT WILL BE BETTER TO QUIT NOW THEN LATER I KNOW HES NOT READY TO QUIT YET BUT I WORRY ABOUT HIMWELL THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS MOST OF THE TIME AND ITS REAL SAD:( BECAUSE PEOPLE WITH STRONG ADDICTIONS ARE STUBBORN WHEN IT COME TO QUITING BUT I GUESS YOU GUYS SHOULD SEEK PEROFESSIONAL HELP WITH A DOCTOR OR SOMETHING.... GOOD LUCK....Best thing you can do is understand he has a real bonafide addiction which is the toughest one to conquer - even worse than heroine or alcohol.

THEN, be understanding and patient. He needs you to love him and not to pressure him because pressuring him will make him smoke more. Honest.

If you let him know you want to support him if he decides to quit, then tell him enticing things, like you-ll make love when he wants a cig, or you-ll fix his favorite snack, or take him to a favorite place or movie. Tell him you-d be willing to help him try Chantix or something too.

Tell him you won-t judge him if he doesn-t have success right away, and let him know no matter what you will do your best to help. Tell him you-ll study up on how smokers have had to try to quit more than once and you-ll study up on things to do to help create a good atmosphere conducive to it. Things like this are all you can do.

The rest is up to him, he has to make up his own mind and find the determination in his own heart. till then, let him know you-re ready to help when he-s ready to quit. Don-t nag!He has a good wife that is worried and you have a good reason to be concerned. First off he smokes, it doesn-t matter if it is 1 or 20 every cigarette is a danger, then on top of that he is a welder that too causes gases. We have a sister -in law that smokes and her daughter has asked, begged, pleaded even contacted the Cancer Association for information and do you think she stopped, nope. If the person does not want to stop no one can make them,. They are their own worse enemies. My kids smoke as well and they are not allowed to smoke around me as I have asthma and do you think they would think of stopping, answer again , nope, they go right on. I feel for you but don-t harp to him about smoking but maybe lay info about cancer around the house more maybe some day soon he will will get the message. Don-t give up the fight. He has to want to do it himself or it wont work. good luck

Will power !!! why am i lacking some of it,,,, how do i get it back to stop smoking? -

Will power !!! why am i lacking some of it,,,, how do i get it back to stop smoking? -

15 years i have been smoking and tried to quit a hundred times but it drives me crazy .... i think its part of my personality by now and if i do quit forever this may phsycologically change my personality.... where does will power come from and how is it developed ??? my theory is as a child when you want toys and sweets and always demanding for them non stop and throwing tantrums coz your parents wont give then after half an hour of putting up with the stress they eventually give in and say o.k this time.... there you go.... and there goes everybodys will power at the same time...... what do you rekon !!!I must have been very fortunate with my parents because they certainly did not give into my tantrums but would explain that by me throwing a hissy fit just does not make them say yes to my demands.

Will Power comes from inside a person if your determined enough to want something it will happen, you really need to want to give up knowing that after 15 years it will be difficult and you have tried and failed it is so easy to say -Oh I failed so what makes me think I can achieve this time- also to fail and make 100 excuses is far easier than trying to keep going.

Your an addict with an addiction, like a drinker but there are people who can help and be supportive.
The market has various patches that you might try.
If your serious about giving up then you and only your sheer determination will see you quit, ask yourself.
Do I really want to stop am I doing it for me?

If you then decide you are going ahead with stopping be prepared for all the pit falls as you wean yourself take time out and do not put temptation in your way stay out of smoking environments, tell friends you trying to quit and need their support and do not get bullied.

Try to imagine the end results you will no longer smell like an ashtray, you will find your fitness level will improve, things will taste better smell better, and most important if you have family they might be spared having to life with a family member who could end up being in a grave yard, take yourself to visit a ward of cancer patients it might give you more insentive, but at the end of the day it is YOU and only YOU who can or can not make the decision.

Good Luckwell if want to quit smoking u should just quit.
its easy

the trick is smoke as many u can in a day. until u get sick.

if it works ok then u mite get a heart attack.

after that u will get the will power to quit smoking or u will quit lifefor every cigarette that you smoke you have to drink a bottle of clam juice.

you will associate the 2 together - get sick of it - quit

if you like clam juice drink something you don-t like for every cigarttee you smoke

thanks.

ssbuy onewell every time you think about a cigareete think about the people who love you and dont want to lose you and how you dont want to lose them and go to the doctor for some help he can provide you.Every new year of my life I do the traditional making of a new year resolution which I woefully violate a few days into the new year if not hours then I started asking questions Why Is So? Then I realised that it is not that the things I will to do are not achievable rather the fact I lump my will together. Then it came to me that one who will climb the ladder will start from the bottom, thus you need to take it one step at a time. Try quitting a day first then two days and so on till you achieve your goal. If you have difficulty you can buy a nicotine patch and try to avoid areas where others smoke freely -cos it might kindle your cravings again. Finally don-t feel discouraged if at first it doesn-t go according to plans Plus encourage yourself in the Word.
Keep pushing it you-ll get there.Your will power should be those kids in that picture. Quitting smoking is not an easy task, your addicted! You can-t just throw a tantrum and in 30 minutes think that everything will be okay. You subjected your body to a cig and it attached itself. I find that when i keep myself busy i don-t smoke as much. When i-m just chillin, i smoke like a broke stove. Good Luck!!!Wouldn-t it be great if we could answer this question??
Can-t say I go a lot on your theory though, being spoilt as a child is something that we all get over, (usually when we get a smack in the face by a kid that hasn-t been spoilt) while still at school!
As for the stopping smoking bit, that would also be a great question to be able to answer, but no one can or nobody would smoke!
If I could just express an opinion here? I would like to say that it really makes me sick to hear some one say - I used to smoke but I gave it up, it only takes a bit of will power-
Nicotine patches don-t really help, I was never able to keep them alight.
So I-m afraid that my answer to your question is that I don-t have an answer!!whenever you need a cigarette chew some gum, it doesn-t matter how much gum you buy because it doesn-t cost as much as a cig k. So make the gum a habit and just remember that whenever you need a cig reach for your gumDon-t use or trust in your will power. Will power is not reliable on it-s own as it can fluctuate. Sometimes you can have all the will in the world, other days it may seem non existent.
It-s seems like a large part of you would like to give up smoking, and that-s great, but just try focusing for a few moments on that part of you that wants to remain a smoker, it may be just a very small part of you, but it is that small part that keeps you from giving up. Find out why that part of you wants to smoke, what are it-s reasons, etc.
Ask that part of you, -where do you smoke?-
- When do you smoke?-
-Why do you smoke?-
write down the answers, and study them carefully, they should help you find new ways to help you without having to rely on will power. Will power in an inborn quality of a man which he can develope himself. Take some firm decision to tackle some problem, stand by it whatsoever it happens. No soft stand. Practise it and you get your will power revived, which you actully have within yourself. For that purpose only you have to act in a firm way, not any one else can do for you.l don- t think you can blame this one on your parents.
Perhaps they let you get away with a little too much, nobody-s perfect...
But what throwing tantrums and getting your own way teaches a child is the art of manipulation;not a lack of willpower..
You-re on your own - make that choice for yourself.
Choose life and health.will power is only what you want to do unless you want to you cant do anything. You just have to tell yourself you are done. I did.Cold turkey. I have been quit for 2 Months, 6 Days, 7 hours, 2 minutes and 31 seconds (67 days). I have saved $264.95 by not smoking 1,009 cigarettes. I have saved 3 Days, 12 hours and 5 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 04/09/2006 5:30 PM. Surround yourself with people who do not smoke. The average craving lasts 3 long minutes. Just keep telling yourself to get through those 3 minutes...it works. I am 34 and smoked since I was 11! I just kept thinking about being here for my kids. Ever smelled cigarette smoke on a baby-s clothes? That is enough to make anyone quit. Good luck.Quitting smoking does not change your personality .you can develop your own will power by not giving in to your own weakness. even though you may have always got your way as a child , This does not have any thing to do with your will power as an adult. It sounds like you are trying to use your childhood to make a excuse for your self. I smoked for 26 years and stopped cold turkey , this was the best way for me. I-m not saying you can do this the way I did,but it worked for me. good luckhave you tried allen carrs easy way to quit smoking?? if understood, it will affect the way you think about smoking forever.buy one of paul mckennas booksyou don-t need will power you need nicotene patches..those fags are pretty darn addictiveWEll first off all you gotta quit asking questions and just do it... when i quit i just done it i said i wasnt smoking another one and havnt since.. its kinda like getting up and going to work.... u just gotta do it to survive.... plus the sooner u quit the sooner your lungs will his you age times two is how long it really takes for your lungs to heal..I don-t know how to get -will power,- but I can tell you how I quit smoking in 1990 and am still smoke-free. I had quit for up to 4 months once, but re-started. So one day I told God that if He didn-t help me I was going to smoke until I was 90 or dead! I admitted my powerlessness over cigarettes and asked God to find me a way to quit that was just right for me. Within about a month a lot of things transpired . . . and He lead me to a book by the American Heart Assoc. that was 21 days to quit smoking. It walked me through three weeks -- week one broke the physical addiction, week two broke the habit, and week three broke the psychological addiction so I wouldn-t re-start during times of great stress -- which I-ve had. I know other people who have cried out to the Lord for help, and He took them out of their addictions in other ways. They are still smoke-free, too. I was soooo addicted. I smoked first thing in the morning, before bed, in the middle of the night if I awoke, and I couldn-t go anywhere without my pack. Sooooo, pray for the way that is just right for you. He loves you and wants to help you even more than you think you want help. Peace.my will power is none existent but i quit smoking 6 weeks ago my doctors do a stop smoking clinic which gives advice and you go every 2 weeks to check on progress and to get patches there are 3 levels of patches im just starting the middle stage its hard work but im saving money actually im not saving very much as i found this great thing called e-bay!!! but at least ive got something to show for my money
i found it best to plan what i was going to do everytime i needed a fag eating a apple slowly worked and using the computer
now i know everytime i need a fag it will only last a couple of minutes
this is my second attempt after 22yrs of smoking (istarted young)
fingers crossed il succeed this time not just for my sake but for my sons sake as well and lastly when i was growing up no meant no and the only thing i got for temper tantrums was a sore throat and occasionally a smacked bum so nothing to do with will poweri went on this drug called zyban its available from your gp you take onetablet a day for 6 days and then two from then on and you must have quit by your 11th day i was really paniking by the 10th day i thought i could never do it!! on the 11th day i woke up and really didnt want a cigarette. and ive never looked back i havent hada fag for 9 months now and i dont think id ever wont another your gp will only give you 2 months supply of these tablets but after then you dont need them anyway. give it a go its worth a try and only the price of a prescripton good luck!!!!these are the steps I took to quit smoking 8 years ago
1. I decided I was not a smoker (as a kid I never wanted to be, but got older and thought it made me cool, then liked it.)
2. I got the niccotine patch
3. I read all of the information that comes with the patch
4. instead of smoking i did one of these several things
a. I ate about 4 or 5 baby carrots
b. I chewed gum or ate candy
c. I brushed my teeth
d. I called someone on the phone
e. I chewed on alot of drinking straws
After a while it got much easier. Good luck! Will power is the gentle teaching of mutual respect - it has no ego - it just develops peacefully.

Asking your friend to stop smoking (People who smoke)? -

Asking your friend to stop smoking (People who smoke)? -

Guys who some I want to ask a question.
I live in Canada and my friend smokes. My friend is 15 or 16 so he is not allowed legally. He is a male.
I want him to quiet. I haven’t tried asking him to quiet because I am scared how he will react.
So the people who smoke do you think it-s a good idea to ask and to tell him a solution. Like in the end tell him if this solution doesn’t work then he can keep smoking.

If I asked you guy as a friend, what would you say?
Oh and don-t tell me how it can be bad for him or provide him cancer and all the crap, just tell me what will his reaction will be and will he likely accept it.
Oh and he is a gangster type of person. Oh and I know him for a week. DO NOT tell me it’s not true friend ship or something.
Answer only what I asked for.Well from a personal stand point, I don-t think you two have shared enough personal experiences for your words to really phase him. I know it wouldn-t affect me to much.

My advice if you really care is to try to find the reason why he thinks he needs to smoke. DO NOT fill his head with that -its bad for you- and -cancer- trip because it never works. May be he needs an outlet and thats the way he vents stress.

If I was you I would just simply see why he finds it nessecary to smoke. Is he trying to impress someone? Is he stressed or depressed? Maybe he does it just for kicks. But just take the situation a friendly way and don-t get defensive with him. Keep in mind an addiction an addiction. Just gage his reaction with bring it up and base whether to continue the topic based on that. You can-t make someone quit smoking. If you try you will only make him mad and more determined to smoke.id prolly get denfensive and say f off. so send a strong message subtelly. how? idk. maybe fake ur death and pretend it was from smoking. wat bad idea, ok im not helping. ill get back to you.

ok im back. put a note on his pacck cigarettes saying something like ur a good frind and i really wish u would stop because i dont want you to keep hurting urself. then on an individual cigareet in side the box, write i guess you dont care. or so ur gonna do it anywayIf he is a gangster type, he probably enjoys shocking and rebelling against people. So telling him to stop will do the opposite.
I would just tell him not to smoke it around me, personally.

You could tell him or ask him to stop but most smokers react angrily. The fact is, it-s not easy to stop, so most will pretend they don-t want to stop anyway, because they fear they CAN-T quit.

At the end of the day, it-s his body. Let him do what he wants. But if you don-t want him to smoke around you then let it be known. It is your right to not smoke, even though he does.

How to stop smoking?? -

When I stopped I just weaned myself off of them. If you smoke a pack a day cut it down 1/4 each week until eventually you can just stop but it really takes willpower this way. if you think about it though all that stuff you buy is basically just nicotine just really expensive so I always tell people to wean off of them. I did have a friend that used chantix and said it worked great.dont light one upCHANTIX!! it is a pill......amazing!!!! starting the first day you take it you simply forget about smoking. you dont withdrawl from nicotine...you simple done crave it! its awesome...1. Set a day for when you want to stop smoking.
2. Throw away any cig boxes, lighters and ash trays.
3. If you know someone else that smokes, make it a team effort.
4. Inform yourself about gums and patches that can help you quit.
5. If nothing works, speak to your doctor.Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.glad u ask. Easiest and best way is. Throw them away and walk away. Willpower will overcome the urge eventually. My boyfriend quit smoking cold turkey using Chantrix. He smoked 2 packs a day for over 30 years and hasn-t had even one cigarette in 7 months!

He did say he had weird dreams while taking the Chantrix (he took it for about 6 weeks), and there are those who claim other strange and possibly dangerous side effects. Ask your doctor though. It might do it for you too! Good luck!Don-t but them, that is what I did. My boyfriend uses the patch because he was more addicted then I was.STOP!!!!!How to quit smoking the easy way by Allen Carr. It made is so easy for me and I smoked for years.self controlYou should try on nicotine gum first. Give yourself some time to quit it totally. It helps :)Perhaps you should join a Quit Smoking Clinic.

Laser treatment cannot stop you from smoking.
If you want to try something nontraditional, try hypnotherapy or acupuncture. Or maybe just go cold turkey. That seems pretty nontraditional too these days. How does that work?
