Stopped smoking and none of the things that happened to my mates is happening to me? -

Sorry if this sounds awful but need to know if anything is wrong.
My mates stopped smoking and said that they coughed up all kinds of things from their lungs almost straight away. I have been stopped for 3 weeks and never even had a cough. They say it is your lungs clearing, does this mean mine are not clearing themselves. I smoked 20-25 a day for 31 years why wont my lungs kick out all the grime I selfishly put in them. Please tell me this is normal what I am having. The only other bad thing to happen is my gums are extremely sore and my lips have split as if they are chapped. Any advice would be appreciatedMy father stopped after 50 years with no coughing up of stuff. Nothing but beneficial effects and his lungs were fine.
It was his kidneys that got him in the end, nothing to do with cigarettes.I stopped almost three years ago after smoking for over 40 years. I have never coughed anything up.You-re not meant to be coughing things up...they-ve got the problems, not you!Well, the only thing I can think of is this. There are apparently little hair like projections on the mucous membrane lining the airways right down to the lungs. These function to waft up any particles and mucous away from the lungs and out of the air passages. When you smoke these little hair like projections get covered with I guess nicotine. Anyway, they stop working so you have less of an ability to get rid of gunk from the lungs. Maybe after smoking so long the little hairs become so damaged that even when you stop they don-t waft up the gunk from my lungs.

What are the effects of quiting smoking? -

What are the effects of quiting smoking? -

I am a smoker of 2 years and on the new year, i am going to quit. I need to know what are the effects of quiting smoking after that time, what will it do to my body, and how can i stop smoking for good without the effects of those gums and patches, as in cold turckey. Thanxs.Congratulations! I-m so proud of you. Smoking is a terrible habit, I smoked for 16 years. I tried quitting cold turkey(didn-t work) then I tried hypnotism. That worked for about a month then I started again. I smoked for about a week, then all of a sudden I just stopped. That was it, it-s been 25 years. One of the smartest things I-ve done. I-m glad you-ve been smoking only a short time, I don-t think it-ll be that difficult for you to stop. Alot of it is just the fact that you want to quit, you have to really want it. Chew some gum, it doesn-t have to be nicotine gum. I found that if something was in my mouth it really helped. Mind over matter...think how good you-ll feel, you-ll be less susceptible to colds. Things will taste better, you won-t taste like an ashtray to those that kiss you. Think of the money you-ll save! You can do it... I did. Good Luck!!!Hm, well your body will obviously crave tobacco, and you WILL most likely want to go back to smoking. To quit for good, you should go and rehabilitate yourself. It isn-t some crazy person place, it is a place to facilitate your needs. Most good effects and better overall health.I have smoked for 35 years and attempted to quit last Janurary. I lasted 9 months and gained 35 pounds from pacing the floor and stuffing my face with junk food to keep from screaming. I restarted in October because I was going insane and getting fat. I did make some changes though-I only smoke outside so I have to think about if i really want one badly enough to go out in the cold. Since you have been smoking for only 2 years you may not be as severely addicted as a long term smoker. Good luck on quitting.I know a lot of you younger people don-t take advice from us older people very well, I didn-t either. But just try to take some from this old Indian man; the sooner you quit, the better. I don-t breath well at all, I cough and hack a lot, and run out of breath at the slightest thing. You don-t ever want to get to that point. I finally quit cold-turkey after smoking for 35 years, but it took me several tries. I almost gave up until one day my heart told me to try doing what I thought I was enjoying, but without the poisen. to pretend I was smoking a real cigarette, taking LONG, DEEP, DRAGS of just plain air, but acting like I was dragging on a real smoke between my fingers, and HOLDING THE AIR IN AS LONG AS I COULD. That trick finally did it for me. Doing that several times made the craving go away. it-s psychosomatic I know, but it works. I still do it sometimes, but after 2 yrs. quit, it-s not so often. I still run out of breath a lot, My lungs are screwed up, I did that to myself and won-t ever get that back during the years I still have to live. Don-t do that to yourself. You still have time, keep your spirit strong, listen to your heart, and do the right thing. One definite effect, is you will be spitting up a lot of phlegm, as your lungs SLOWLY rid themselves of the tar build up. I quit cold turkey at 20 years and did not have a problem. For me that was weird. I was still my normal self. And you might get a little heavy too, expecially in the wallet as you will not be spending money on the smokes now. lol In Texas, 1 Jan 2007, cigarettes go up $1 a pack unilaterally.Three days of hell but after that it will be easier but no drinking as I did could not remember what I did but woke up with a packet - still smoking.............Dunno, but listen. Last year my grandpa had lung cancer, they removed half a lung and now it spread. Yesterday they gave him three weeks. Google lung cancer and that alone should give you inspiration to quit, forever. It really is a horrible way to die.weight gain.....
...trust me when i say 2 years vs 10 is painfully visible. quit now and save you and your family thousand dollars in med bills when your sick from the effects of smokingSome things you may experience is headache, irritability and you may find yourself snacking a lot more. Some things you can do to help you without any of those patches or gums is just keep your mouth really clean. Brush your teeth a lot and chew strong peppermint gum. That may ruin the taste for you. Also, stay away from drinks like coffee, soda and alcohol. For some reason, these things trigger cig cravings. You should find a hobby, something to keep your mind off of smoking, and stay away from those who are smoking at least for now when you can. Good luck to you.Nicotine withdrawal takes 3 days; after that its purely psychological. You will be wanting a cigarette frequently but don-t give in - I was told in a smoking class that it will go away in 7 seconds. The longer you go without a cigarette, the longer it will be between longings. Don-t even think of having just one - it doesn-t work that way. In the end I just went cold turkey on my own. I had chronic bronchitis - was sick all the time. I was wheezing, had night sweats, headaches - fever. Was probably on my way to emphesema - lung cancer. Chewed gum til I was past the tough part. Good luck.Good for you!!!

Quit while you have only 2 years under your belt--it is infinitely easier than waiting 30 years to quit.

Get some gum and chew it--that will help.

I know you said you didn-t want to try nicotine gum --but it does help ease the cravings as do those Commit lozenges.

But if you want to do it cold turkey, make sure to have some Tylenol handy as you may experience some headaches.

Good luck and I wish you success!!It made me horney when I quit.very serious effects such as extending your own life, lower chance of lung cancer, but first thing you-ll probley expiriance is wanting anouther cigarettestress and insanity.a few more years on lifeDrink LOTS of orange juice. I quit smoke 7 years ago and my doctor recommended that I drink lots of OJ. Somehow the juice helps flush out nicotine and helps reduce the cravings..... And, it really worked. I have not smoked since and I quit cold turkey.

as you detox you will experience cravings, hunger, dizziness, sleeplessness, BAD mood, and coughing as the tar clears out of the lungs. This stage lasts a couple of weeks. Be patient because this is a must! You will soon have clearer lungs and the lungs will be healing. Best wishes to you!!!

Can n 1 convince me that no matter wat 1 can stop smoking. im in serious trouble...? -

i ned help!!!If we had the time and space, I-d tell you how I lost both of my parents (they were both 61) because of smoking. My mom-s lungs were so wasted, I couldn-t even describe it-- she was at about 20% lung function. My dad smoked 3 packs a day despite having 3 heart attacks while in his 40-s.
All I can say is; I know it-s difficult but it you can do it if you really want. There are all kinds of products out there to help you and I know your family and friends will support you 100%.
Please try.Sounds like you already know you need to stop smoking. So what is the person supposed to do to -convince- you.

I think everyone here in the 21st century realizes smoking is poisonous, and any side benefit (weight loss, calming) is MORE than passed up by the danger to the heart, lungs, skin, immune response and circulation.

And of course - there-s the about 94% chance of getting lung cancer; I hear that-s fun.

Start today - by at least cutting down. You know what to do - you can do it - I-ve seen many folks give up smoking for life. You can do it. Look at how many other people have quit (me included). It sounds simple, but start by seeing yourself as a nonsmoker. You will like what you see. Think about how much better you will smell. Food will taste better to you. You will be able to exercise more without becoming short of breath. You will no longer have to worry about running out of cigs when the shops are closed.
Think of more reasons to quit. The more reasons you have, the easier it is.
One other thing, in my experience the physical cravings go away in about a week. After that point, it gets MUCH easier.
Best of luck to you!

How do you convice somebody to stop smoking? -

How do you convice somebody to stop smoking? -

Statistics. They are more scary than you think.Try a different approach

Ask what would it take for them to stop?

Find a good reason to quit, until a person finds that reason
it will be very difficult

I quit after 55+ years and a 5 pack a day habit

This was probably my 10th + time tryingvery difficult. I was a heavy smoker for 25 years and I have been fighting my addiction for the last 5 with some degree of success, I think I now have a bit more ammo than when tried to give up the first times.
So I guess the best way would be to get them in contact with simpathetic ex smokers. At the beginning I did read a good ebook, but there are some bad ones out there so don-t go out shelling money. Also, if you could get the person involved in some physical excercize and get them to stick to it then they-ll automatically smoke less to have more breath.
For instance I have some dumbells next to the couch and so long as I keep on using them througout the whole movie, then I don-t feel so guilty about being a couch potato in the evening and I do lose about 1kg or more every 6 movies. Doing this keeps my mind on the dumbells and the weight losing thing and so I manage to put the craving from the smoking way off my mind, the more I sweat the less I want to smoke. I-ve been off 4 months this time, however I am cheating a bit as I do chew nicorette.... still, it-s a battle in progress and the more we battle the better fighters we become.have a fat kid challange them to a foot race and let them see for themself what makes you breath harder. You can-t. People have to want to stop smoking on their own but that doesn-t mean you can-t remind them how unhealthy, stinky, nasty, unattractive, etc. it is.Try to get them to think of the children that are negatively impacted by their poor choices. The kids lives are much more important than a brief high.Having someone stop smoking is a difficult task for both the smoker and the helper. I believe unless the smoker truly wants to stop smoking, it will be hard to truly convince them. It-s well known the problems associated with smoking, as they are frequently presented in society today. Reinforce these problems that smoking causes, and hopefully soon they will realize the problems it causes on the body. They have to want to quit. My grandfather had lung cancer and still smoked even while he was on oxygen. My mom was given the news yesterday that she has lung cancer, again. She survived five years since the first diagnosis. She smoked through chemo/radiation. She never stopped, she has smoked for 60yrs and this time, the diagnosis is too late, the tumors are too large. She doesn-t believe smoking causes this problem, or that it could be the sole cause. She believes it could be the weeds she rolled up as a child, and lit them and smoked them. Or the smog from when she lived in LA, the exhaust from when she worked at a landfill, and the car exhaust pipes came out the driver-s side and covered her in fumes. It will never be the smoking, nor will she take any responsibility. She was given the clear signal last November, the doctor did not do an xray before releasing her. She now believes that had he done that, the tumor would have been found, and her life would have been saved. Possibly, but it still has to do with the smoking, to me, to her doctors. But not to her. How do you convince someone? I don-t honestly know. I write this as I smoke my cigarette, it-s disgusting and killing my mom and myself. Can I quit? I-ve tried three times in the past year, each time only lasting a couple months and that was still sneaking one with my morning coffee. I know the risks, I see the devastation on a daily basis, I hear her choking for air, I know death is soon, yet I still haven-t been able to quit, and I am angry with myself about that. How do you convince someone.................................…Projectile vomit on them every time you see them do it.I told them, --If you keep smoking, you will kill yourself, you become an athiest, and God hates you. I hate you and i want to kill you. You disgust me with you smoking crap. I dont want to see it anymore, and please, burn in hell becuase I hate you.--UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAVE TO WANT TO STOP ! NICOTINE IS A DRUG AND IT-S VERY ADDICTIVE. I-VE HEARD THERE IS A NEW MEDICATION (Chantix)! ON THE MARKET THAT-S SUPPOSED TO WORK GREAT.
